It seemed like it was worth trying...

I had a 'lightbulb' moment when thinking about stacking photography: What would happen if you take a rapid series of pictures of insects moving across the field of view, and then merged them in Zerene Stacker? Would it make a freakish, super-long insect? So I tried it out.
This time of year it is pretty easy to find wandering wooly bear caterpillars. These were set up to walk briskly in front of the camera, while I took pictures. I then ran them through ZS. Most were abysmal failures since the program tends to lock on to the caterpillar so it stacks all the caterpillars in one place. But some worked. The effect was not what I was hoping for, but I though I would share them anyway for comments and suggestions.

Ha ha, you have produced an illusion of a line of Pine Processionary caterpillar. Well done for stepping out of the rut and working empirically.

I tried something similar with moving trains and got a new and interesting Amtrak locomotive.

Cool! The result clearly depends on the interval between pictures.

In the wooly bears, if you download and enlarge you can see how the cat looks like a herd of stampeding buffalo. Weird buffalo. The 2nd one especially.

Love It. Looks like a cross section of a carpet. Stepping out of the box and trying new ideas can be a lot of fun. Most of mine find their way to the trash can.... But every so often......

A truly enjoyable idea. I tried to warn everyone that once they try focus stacking they will find how addictive it is and there is no cure for the pleasure it brings.

I am thinking that there are settings in Zerene stacker that control how stringently it aligns pictures. That might change the look. Also, the photo software provided by Canon includes a 'stitching' program that is meant to stitch together panoramic images. There, one sets where each image joins another. That one could give me more control on how these things look.
Ideas for a rainy day.
