Curved flatscreen? That sounds like an oxymoron.

If the antenna doesn't work, look in to YouTube TV. We had cable combined with internet and phone. We cut out the cable and kept the internet and phone. We are now using YouTube TV. It has 70 channels including all the local channels. All you need is decent internet speed and a smart TV. It works great and has a better picture. Stream up to 3 devices/tvs at once. Unlimited recording storage and you can record up to 9 shows at once. Go to YouTube TV's website and type in your zip code for the channel line up. And it's only $50 a month. They have a 14 day free trail so you can test it out.

I am thinking about cutting the cable cord and looking into tv antenna's. We have 4 towers within 95 miles but lots and lots of trees so I am thinking I will need an outdoor model.

My question's for everyone are:

1. What model do you have?
2. Does it work like it's supposed to?
3. Would you purchase the same model again?

Thanks
Cindy

I use a Mohu 50, I’m in the mountains, I’m actually a little more than 50 miles away, and it works fine. It’s also just a simple little piece of plastic that sits on the shelf next to the tv....the newer ones stick to the wall.

"Curved flatscreen? That sounds like an oxymoron."

Not an oxymoron: Tube TVs had convex-shaped screens bulging outward. Flat screens have flat surfaces that can be straight...or curved with no change to the surface. Like the inside of a stovepipe has a flat surface even though the pipe itself is round.

Unless you have a clear line of site and a tall tower with a high gain antenna (and perhaps a low noise amplifier), 95 miles is going to be very marginal for VHF or UHF digital TV signals. Even FM radio, which has a much lower bandwidth, would be problematical at that distance. If I were in that situation, I would be looking at satellite services.

Agree. Satellite and/or cable. The only HDTV station that I get here
is only about 10% of the distance you mentioned and my reception
is irregular, varying with the weather conditions.

If you need a cheap way to assess your ability to receive HD TV channels, try making an antenna yourself. I did it using leftover scrap wood, wire hangers and some hardware I had on hand and it worked well enough for my purposes. There are lots of YouTube videos like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhlmJTMzw&feature=player_embedded to show you how to do it.

My wife made a couple those antennas. They work better than the commercial ones

I cut the cord 4 years, the cable companies, continued to raise the price after i talked to them and ask, if i could get it lowered. No way were they going to work with me. I went to walmart just looking around in electronics and noticed this antennae. I would have bought the larger one (version) but at the time i had already cut the cord. The antennae was valued at $59.00. I bought it to see if it would work. This is an outdoor antennae and i mounted on the same staff that the dish was on. This antennae would receive up to 50-60 miles signals. If nothing else it would get local channels. I was tired of paying 80+ dollars a month for cable with same movies running over, and over again. At the same time i wanted to have the same functions as the dish service (remote) stop, play, ff,rew etc. I will get into that later. I installed the antenna and scanned the air for channels. It picked up 43 in my area, yes some were spanish, religious and movies, locals. I was happy. I going to try and cut and past the antennae on the reply it looks like a big bowtie.https://www.walmart.com/ip/Antennas-Direct-C2-J30-V-ClearStream-2-Complete-Long-Range-UHF-VHF-Antenna/34845738 This is the link. It cost more now, but the up front cost is way better than month to month cable bill.
The next thing i did was look up a system (remote) to control the TV. I went to best buy and they said "they carry TIVO" which at the time carried a subscription. If i was cutting the cord it was all the way... I came across a company Channelmaster DVD+. Called on phone and talked to tech. sounded wonderful, just what i was looking for. I ordered it quite expensive at the time, like i said up front costs and the free tv all the time, even recorded movies, shows whatever. Check out ChannelMaster website, they sell antennae, amplifiers, cable, etc and they will talk to you. The device that I have is like an ipad, very thin and to record shows you will have to purchase your own 1tb hard drive $60 at best buy. I now have received notice they have a new model called stream on the market for less than what I paid for mine.

TiVo is really good, but they have a subscription charge. As you have stated there are other systems that do not have any additional cost.

Their is nothing to keep an old pre digital antenna from receiving digital signals. A tv antenna is a tv antenna.

Winegard has been in the antenna business since 1953.
They make many different types for many different applications.
Do a little research on their site.

Exactly - there’s noting different about digital vs analog reception as far as antennas goes, BUT you need to match the type of antenna to the frequency (VHF or UHF) of the signal you’re trying to receive.

I would recommend you go to the web site http://www.tvfool.com put in your location and see what channels are available to you. I use three antennas up about 50 ft on my ham radio tower pointed in three different directions. I get 38 channels. (after deleting the religious channels) I get all of the normal networks twice from two different directions, four versions of PBS and a bunch of other channels playing old TV programs and movies.

1. As for what I use, I have two 8 bay antennas with preamps. One pointed north at Moilne IL and one pointed east at Peoria IL. My third antenna is an old Wingard yagi pointed south west to get my fourth PBS from Macomb IL. I need to put up one more antenna, a VHF antenna to get a CBS station in Moline still transmitting on ch4 and possibly a fifth PBS on ch12 in Iowa City. All of the antennas are combined to a single coaxial cable in the basement, amplified and split to three TVs in the living room, kitchen and den.
2. Yes, it works.
3. If I were doing it again, I would use 4 bay antennas as the 8 bay are very sharply directional and are a pain to keep aligned on the stations.

Remember when it comes to antennas, there is no substitute for size or height. ;-)

Good luck cutting the cable
Fred

P.S. I have a DSL internet connection from the local phone company and get Netflix and Amazon that way.
