I am going to Monfalcone, Italy next month - flying into Venice, renting a car, and driving up there. Any suggestions on good photo ops on the way there or while up there? I would really love some photos of ancient Roman architecture. I just don't know what's up there.

Thanks in advance!

Tim

Don't forget Venice itself, lots of photo ops there although you will never get "people free" pictures.
You can't take a car there though, the best way in is to take a train, the view of The Grand Canal will amaze you as you come out of the station. Then get on a No 1 vaporetto (water bus) and get off at St Marks Square, then follow the signposts for "statzione" a that will take past every well know parts of Venice.
Make sure you have a spare battery and lots of storage. Will let you more about the potential for the rest of you trip.
Cheers John

Further to my first reply Trieste is worth a visit if only for the old tram! (www.tramdeopcina.it) For some good Roman stuff take a trip to Pula in Croatia its about 125km, about 1hour 30mins drive.
There are several Roman sites including the arena. Look up Pula in wikipedia, its on the Istrian peninsula and used to be in the former Yugoslavia.
Hope this helps John

Go to the library and take out some books on Italy. I suggest one by "Eyewitness travel" or "Lonely Planet" Also web searches work well. Italy has some great web sites.
If you are driving take a GPS. If you have a cell phone that works in Europe get it unlocked and so you can put a Italian SIM card in it. Most US phones do not work in Europe so make sure that yours does. You can buy a cell phone in Europe for around 20 euros. The Italian drivers are aggressive put courteous and merging from a side road takes some aggresive driving.

Venice is a photographers dream. I unfortunately was only there for a couple of hours. I could spend weeks there. Do some research for each of the sites in your trip. Have fun.
