I’m off to China, Tibet and Hong Kong and am thinking about what lenses to take with me. As you all know, somehow the pull of gravity increases as we get older so weight is a consideration. I’ll be taking my D7100 with a Nikon 18-200 as my primary lens. I also plan on taking my Nikon 10-20 which is great for landscapes as well as crowded cities. Do you think I should also include my 35mm 1.8 in my kit. I’ve taken it on other trips and not used it very often. My other concern is with changing lenses often. I’ve often ended up with sensor dust which is tough to deal with when traveling. I always bring a blower and this trip I’m bringing a sensor cleaning kit.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

From a weight point of view, the 18-300 lens weighs the same as the 18-200, so this is my general purpose travel lens. On a recent trip to Japan, I also brought a Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 thinking I would need it for the inside of temples, etc. I only used it a few times, and it is fairly heavy.

Some airlines have tighter restrictions on carry-ons also.

Include the 35mm 1.8. It is small, light, and will serve a purpose that, to my mind, the 18-200 will not.

If you never shoot at night, leave the 35 at home. I always find space for a fast 50 just for the evening & night opportunities. One of those isn't a lot of added weight.

He has a DX camera the 35 mm is a better option but It can be left at home.

In my opinion you have a nice travel kit with your three lenses. You bought them to use so take them. Your kit only weighs 4 lbs which is fairly light. They will fit beneath the seat in front of you on your flights. I just returned from a 35 day tour and I used the equivalent of a 24-120mm f/2.8-4 for 33 of the days, 1 day 16-36mm, 1 day 100-400mm and 0 days 32mm f/1.4. I still have your identical equipment and it works great. Have a great trip!

Thank you. Your suggestion makes total sense, in that if I don’t take them all I’ll probably regret it.

I would bring a compact camera. However, if you want to bring your D7000, I would recommend just the 18-200mm. That gives you a pretty good spread, and it's not too big. I went to China in 1998, and I shot hundreds of pictures with a little Canon Elph film camera that I carried in a belt case. No regrets.

I bet the 18-200 will make the majority of the pictures you will shoot.

Doesn't the 10-20 kinda replicate the low end of the 18-200?

Me personally? I'd take the 18-200 and the 35. I like traveling light.
My light arsenal is my 18-200 and a 50. Yup, don't use the 50 much, but it's light and available.
Just my opinion.

Yes!

You may regret leaving a lens at home, but you will never regret shedding weight.

Just take the 10-20, no changing lenses, less weight. Otherwise just take the 35mm.

18mm on a crop camera is just not wide enough. The 10-20 will come in handy. It IS why I suggested a seconded dedicated camera for the wide angle. If it's not feasible on a China trip, it sure comes in handy on U.S. trips.

For years to numerous countries in Asia, Africa, and South America, I take my current camera, d500 now, Tamron 16-300 lens, and Sigma 10-20. I've never used it but also the extender, 1.4X. Depending on where I'm going and doing, a medium weight tripod. Most places will do laundry so that's it.

Speaking of laundry....one of my photo friends packs as much photo equipment as he can with the bare essentials as far as clothing goes and does laundry as many times as necessary. Esp. when in Africa, Bali, Costa Rica, etc.
