I’m off to China, Tibet and Hong Kong and am thinking about what lenses to take with me. As you all know, somehow the pull of gravity increases as we get older so weight is a consideration. I’ll be taking my D7100 with a Nikon 18-200 as my primary lens. I also plan on taking my Nikon 10-20 which is great for landscapes as well as crowded cities. Do you think I should also include my 35mm 1.8 in my kit. I’ve taken it on other trips and not used it very often. My other concern is with changing lenses often. I’ve often ended up with sensor dust which is tough to deal with when traveling. I always bring a blower and this trip I’m bringing a sensor cleaning kit.
Thank you in advance for your feedback.
I also seldom use the prime lens. even though it doesn't take up much space. The 2 other lenses should serve you fine.
Doesn't the 10-20 kinda replicate the low end of the 18-200?
Me personally? I'd take the 18-200 and the 35. I like traveling light.
My light arsenal is my 18-200 and a 50. Yup, don't use the 50 much, but it's light and available.
Just my opinion.
The 18-200 and the 10-20 will be all you need. As you indicated you probably will have very little use the 35.

I would not waste my time with the 35mm.
If you never shoot at night, leave the 35 at home. I always find space for a fast 50 just for the evening & night opportunities. One of those isn't a lot of added weight.

Good on ya, I’m off to The Peoples Republic of China as well departing ATL on the 09 October....am taking underwear and way to much camera “stuffs”...my advice use common sense when taking camera things
Just sayin,
The “G”
Only one person hit on the main reason for the 35, low light, night, city lights etc. If you do that stuff take it. Other wise you will have to use a good brace to do low light work.
I know it adds weight on a trip like that, but it's one reason I like to use two cameras. Put the wide angle on one camera and the longer lens on the other. Then you never have to change a lens.

I use an 18-200, I don't have to change lenses. Only need to carry one camera.

If you want to show how crowed an area is use the 18-200 toward the 200 end.
I don't know your age, but I will soon be 80 and if I were taking the trip it would be my D810, 14 -24, 24 - 120 f4 and/or my 70-200 plus a light tripod ( which I would have to buy).

My D7100, 18-200 along with the 10-20 used to be my TRAVEL PACK. Handled everything I ever wanted. I would only take two lenses. Less space and I don't like to change two many lenses in the field.
Shanghai at night is reason enough for the faster lens. Hong Kong is also a night time and dark alley shooting bonanza. Walking around during the day, the 18-200 should catch about everything, maybe carry the 10-20 too. You’ll quickly get a feel for it all. The Imperial Palace and Great Wall require a lot of steps. Depends how much you want to carry.

Are you shooting full frame or cropped? If you are shooting on a full frame camera, the 35 would take its place on the D7100 the OP is taking. The 50 would equate to a short tele.

This comes up regularly. When I travel I take - canon 70D with 18 135 canon xti with 18 55 canon l tele. Charger for both filters camera rain jacket cards for both cameras cleaning stuff . I have a battery pack on the 70D and take the AA battery holder . Last trip I left the binoculars at home. Xti is a backup. I do not want to be caught saying 'should have brought ...... '
