I highly recommend a used Sigma 18-200mm zoom. Good quality photos. You can find them for $75-$100 on eBay. You’ll be happy with this lenses.

My favorite lens on my T4i and T1i is Sigma 17-70, long enough and fast enough for my uses, I have a 55-250 Canon that seldom gets used.
Your needs are not in question. The OP wants a lens that can be used for sports, I don’t think 17-70 qualify.
You should consider the Tamron 18-400. I’ve used it for sports with great results. Several of my sports photos taken with this lens have been published. It’s also very affordable.

Wouldn't it be a little short for soccer?

I use a 17-70 for close sports, like marathons. In general field sports are greatly helped by a longer lens. I tend to use a 70-200 2.8 sometimes with a 1.4x or a 2x. Going much longer and someone with limited experience will start having trouble keeping play in frame. Eventually most people will need a 70-200 for one reason or another, so it is a lens the OP might want to consider.
My sigma 18-300 is my current walk around lens decent quality and range for most situations. The 55-250 stm is also good for field sports and is less expensive. New the sigma is $399 and the canon has a msrp of $299 but can be found new for around $200-$250. KEH, Andorama and B&H are great options for quality used gear.
I'm shooting with a Rebel T3i and a Tamron 18-400. It has lots of reach for HS sports. I still have a T2i, but it has a sensor spot. When we bought it, it came with an 18-55 lens and a 55-250. I had pretty good results, but when I discovered the spot on the sensor, I got the Rebel T3i and a Tamron 18-270 which I liked even better. I bought the Tamron 18-400 new at Best Buy but they can be found on E-bay at pretty good prices. Good luck on the field!

Great suggestions already, including the EF-S 55-250. Costing around $500 new, the Canon EF 70-300mm F/4.0-5.6 IS II USM is a bargain for the performance delivered at that price.
I have both the 55-250 and the 70-300 and I prefer the latter. Longer and better IQ imho. Harry
