Sure you will get many replies. I have gotten good photos at NAS Jacksonville Fl. First airshow was with a d70 and kit zoom 70-300. Got good photos. Now I use a D500 with 70-200 2.8. Shoot aperture priority at about 3.5. They are not going to be flying if there are a lot of clouds so light results in fast shutter speeds. If you have good access and it is the Blues flying 1-4 with take off in a very slow climb but be in a Delta. Then if you can get near where they lift off 5&6 will take off slowly until one of them suddenly goes vertical. Shoot continuous shutter speed. About 2/3s way through the show one will make a low altitude high speed pass. I took the attached photo at a practice show at NAS Pensacola. Volunteers at the Museum do the announcing at these shows. I have friend (former A6 pilot and one of the volunteers) tip me off so I was ready for the pass. 10 frames/sec and I got about 3 frames where at least a part of the plan was in photo including this one. This is low altitude and 700mph!

I’m going to be in a safety boat in the ocean that is inside the usual safety zone. I’ve been told the pilots use the boat as a marker to align their flybys. The viewing area is on shore at Huntington Beach.

At our local (Edwards AFB) shows, although the aerial demos start at noon and run until 4:30pm, gates open at 9 am. We are there by 8:30 am and immediately make a run for the flight line to stake out our position to the “intersection” where the returning planes turn to taxi in front of the crowd.

We plant ourselves there and hold our spots. We don’t look around at the static displays — that can wait until we’re on our way out. We’re there for the “show”. If we give up our spot to look around, we’ll lose it. Don’t want anyone in front, blocking our shots. Yeah, we’re selfish that way.

But, back on point. Get their early and be prepared to stay in the spot you get all day.

Horn photo (or local camera store) had several booths at LNAS, several camera vendors were there, to loan lenses, etc. They had models there for our use posting with some planes, or what ever... . If only I could have gotten in!!!! It would have been great... Here is a link to a short movie horn photo made there...https://youtu.be/mA6nErx9TUA

They practice for those shows. Any chance you can get out on that boat, or even on the shore nearby, during the practice?

It would be a good way to work out the settings and learn what to expect.

find a spot where impolite people don't stand up in front of you. especially in a paid seating section.

Unfortunately, that's next to impossible, as people are constantly moving, in crowds that big.

Friday is Practice day for the performers, especially the flight demonstration teams such as the blues. Saturday and Sunday are the performances for the public.

As someone mention try to go on Friday either to the Beach or a Boat outside of the safety Zone and practice It will also give you and idea of where the aircraft is coming from and where they will be in the air. Also be aware that the weather will play a part in their performance over the three days.

I will be at fleet week on October 13th in San Francisco which is their last performance day. San Francisco presents its own unique chanllenges for shooting an air show.
