It's a Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)
Beautiful butterfly. Fairly common around Phoenix. Doesn't tolerate freezes but annually repopulates from Mexico and the borderlands as far as the northern tier and Canada. Dines from a long menu of nectar producing blossoms --likes thistles especially.
A nice shot. I don't know what it is though.
