Read a recent Sports Illustrated article about a special "mud" equipment managers of ALL major league teams use on new baseballs. Its to help the pitcher get a grip that untreated balls lack. Hmmmph! of course this was an untreated ball and so I didn't get it!

I believe it actually used to be done by hand, now I think they have machines that do it. I think they are also kept in a climate controlled room till game time. I have also seen where they say they use an average of 72 b-balls per game. Watching it sure seems like a lot more as they throw it out every time one touches the ground anymore.

To ask to identify a subject that the operator is not familiar with to me is a valid question in case that is your primary concern.
