I believe it actually used to be done by hand, now I think they have machines that do it. I think they are also kept in a climate controlled room till game time. I have also seen where they say they use an average of 72 b-balls per game. Watching it sure seems like a lot more as they throw it out every time one touches the ground anymore.

It could be nearly anything. It is referred to as : An Egg shell Finish ...... as it closely resembles that surface in real life. It would seem to be a surface found on a kitchen appliance of some sort...????

Well, if you ask me this is a photographic forum not a place to ask people what an object or a surface is. I do not know what it is but if the original was not a light gray this image is underexposed.
To ask to identify a subject that the operator is not familiar with to me is a valid question in case that is your primary concern.
