We are not really comparing apples to apples considering the difference in the crop. I like the b&w crop much better, like the left line of the pool edge and the detail in the pool bottom. A much better comparison would be same crop in color and b&w. Worth additional word. Here’s good advise. Tell your wife to go fly a kite. It’s your image. See where that gets you. 😏

Did you see the redo I did a couple of pages back. I think I addressed your issues. By the way, I love my wife too much to tell her to fly a kite. She has professional training in design and color so I tend to listen to her opinion.

Well, I like them both - for different reasons. I love the tone of the blue in the colour version. But I really like the sort of multiple reflections that show up in the B&W. I think you could probably get the same result in the colour version with a little work on the shadows. I know that doesn't help you, probably.

Check out my redo from one of my earlier posts. What do you think?

I would try to keep it to what was seen. If the upper color shot is that, great but if the shadows were that open in the original view than go with the B&W.

A very common sense approach.

Tie for me. B&W for detail. Color, oh well, for color! Love the blueish/purple and reflection. I don't know how you score this response but good luck.

I score it with appreciation for your taking the time to comment.

If we all liked the same thing....We would all be looking at the same photos. Make a color print for where ever she wants to enjoy it and enjoy your print. Both are awesome.

The original has been hanging on the wall in my office for 10 years. Unfortunately, I no longer have my 13x19 printer to update to my most recent processing.

I am thinking that Ansel Adams did mainly landscape so I am not sure if he would endorse that photo. I like the colored one better.

Nope...real life is in color and that is so spectacular that I really don't like it in black and white.

Well here is my opinion for what it is worth, (nothing).

I like the color in the first one and I think the B&W would be improved with adding sepia tone to it. However, having said that and I know that you had restrictions when doing the exposure, I do not like the crop or the framing in either one of them. Sorry!

Sepia just doesn't seem right for a photo with a significant water component. As for the crop, I was limited by the narrow walkway on the edge of the pool and the 30 people surrounding me. I wanted the detail of the reflection since the ceiling was magnificent and the reflection enhanced it. As I said, when I took this picture in 2009 I did not have the skills to use my camera to the max of its capabilities.

This morning my wife looked at a photo hanging in my office and commented that it could have been done better. I took the photo of the inside pool at the Hearst Castle more than 10 years ago when my photo skills were primitive. While my skills are somewhat improved, given the back lighting of the large windows, I am not sure I could have done much better.

A few weeks ago I was working on old photos for conversion to black and white and decided I wanted to see what the old Hearst pool photo would look like in black and white. I found the photo and showed it to my wife. Her comments of the old photo were quite negative. I agreed that lacking color totally changed the faithful reproduction of the space. However, B&W also opened up detail that I could not find in the original photo. (I thought the enhanced reflection was quite cool.) My wife found the reflection of the water very confusing and the black and white line distracted from the subject. What!

After 5 minutes of fruitless arguing, I have decided to leave it to the Hoggs to make a few comments on the merits, or lack thereof, of each photo. Given the difficult lighting of the images, I know this photo is not ideal. That said, I need some help in settling our dispute.

I like the color photo better. Hope you don’t mind, I cropped it (see attached). Sometimes less is more.

You wouldn't believe how many times I get shots and edit them to what was seen only for my family to say I skewed the color ... so I show them my iphone shot and they are silent. LOL My sunsets often have color in them that seems made up but isn't. I'm old school and grew up with film. I do shoot histogram to the right to hold more shadow detail and move it back in post to look as I saw it and do this all the time ... except for family shots where I use a off camera flash and shoot for perfect exposures as I'm controlling the light. I think taking this shot again in bracket mode and using HDR software to combine your shots maybe the better answer if you want to improve the shot (only if you are allowed to use a tripod there). Most important of all shots are composition and is it interesting? I take lots of shots and choose only the better ones to save but learn a lot by freely taking more shots than needed. Sometimes I go back and try harder to perfect my flower shots. Those low or high or to the side shots work. And I use a tripod constantly. I remember taking birthday pictures of blowing out the candles and decided to change it up and stood on a chair to take the shot. The angle view was great as I took a series of shots with only candle light used. Started with the birthday person looking up at me and my top cake view was perfect followed by blowing out the candles and smiling. Enjoy

Agree with the wife. Hope you are not shooting photos to please her. Her input maybe valuable maybe not. Not worth an argument

To my eye they are each, individually, different and independently laudable images...each offering wonderful visual experiences in their own right!
