Well, I like them both - for different reasons. I love the tone of the blue in the colour version. But I really like the sort of multiple reflections that show up in the B&W. I think you could probably get the same result in the colour version with a little work on the shadows. I know that doesn't help you, probably.

I would try to keep it to what was seen. If the upper color shot is that, great but if the shadows were that open in the original view than go with the B&W.

Tie for me. B&W for detail. Color, oh well, for color! Love the blueish/purple and reflection. I don't know how you score this response but good luck.

If we all liked the same thing....We would all be looking at the same photos. Make a color print for where ever she wants to enjoy it and enjoy your print. Both are awesome.

You are the first to weigh in. My wife was not impressed with you comment (well intentioned as it may be). She has her opinion and short of an endorsement from Ansel Adams I don't think it is going to change.

I am thinking that Ansel Adams did mainly landscape so I am not sure if he would endorse that photo. I like the colored one better.

I feel your pain but the B&W image is, by far, the superior image.

I am not normally real big on B&W but I find that version of this shot easier to understand and I do like it. I am far from expert but could you bring up the shadows a bit in the color version to show a little more detail. The color is really beautiful. Has you wife been able to tell you what she thinks could have been better? Maybe she is just flattering you since you are a much better photographer now than you were then.😉

She was flattering me? When did that happen? (Just kidding. She embraces my photography and never complains when I wonder off to find a new shot. I love her.)

I like the original color photo the best. The revised color version seems to have to color subdued a bit, and I don't like that. I think the B&W has too much detail in the reflection, which I fine distracting, and the same for the revised color. The original could use a bit more detail in the reflection, but not a lot more.

I have no clue on how to manipulate the detail in the reflection. I think the reflection is the whole purpose of the photo and the detail is what makes the picture work.

Like the color photo better. I think its pretty good. Having said that my recommendation is " yes dear".

"Yes dear" is my stand reply. You don't want to over engage when it is not necessary.

As a married man, you can be happy or you can be right. Take your pick. I'd go with happy because in this case I think your wife was right.

Oh, that hurts.

Well here is my opinion for what it is worth, (nothing).

I like the color in the first one and I think the B&W would be improved with adding sepia tone to it. However, having said that and I know that you had restrictions when doing the exposure, I do not like the crop or the framing in either one of them. Sorry!

I’d crop and straighten something like this, but stay with the color version. The original seems too “busy” to me.

Let's agree to disagree. While I like your crop, I thought that capturing the volume of the space with its incredible detail was what made the image interesting. The architecture of the room and the detailed craftsmanship in its design is stunning. That's what I wanted to show. Also, the extreme contrast of the light coming through the windows blows out the details of the outside trees. I wanted to downplay this aspect.

Ask if you can go back and do it again :D

I like the B/W version, personally, but both are good. I wouldn't argue with her too much about it because everyone has a flavor they prefer and not all of us can articulate it. We can, however, be less harsh in delivering the sentiment.

This could be a fun project if you still have the raw file.

If you look at my follow up posts you will see my improved version of both photos.

My comment, and I have used it, go take a better picture.

Ah, take a better picture. So if I see something of great beauty but the circumstances for taking the photo are not ideal, I should just ignore it. Don't think so.

This looks like an excellent opportunity to schedule another trip to the Hearst Castle. Explain to you wife that you agree with her and the image needs to be remade. Take lots of images at different apertures and ISO settings and ask her to help you pick the best one.

In other words, admit you're wrong and beg forgiveness. Maybe you could even use this as an excuse to buy some new equipment or take a photo class!

Now this is some solid advice. I was wondering how I was going to bring up the subject of some new lenses.
