Just wondering as I'm doing more and more street photography in the trenches of NYC.
I usually use one of two lens, a 10 to 24 zoom or a 70 to 200 F 2.8.
What are some of your thoughts on what you people like to use and why?

Thanks
Ed

I would think that the longer zoom would help to keep you inconspicuous and allow you more natural candid shots.

If you have specific shots you are looking for, then you obviously want the "best" lens for that shot. If you don't know what you are looking for, I would choose a 18-200 or 28-300 lens.

To me, the "best" walk around lens is the one on my Canon SX40 - 24mm to 830mm... And its a damn good guality one too... A plus is that the total camer is NOT heavy...

My favorite "street" lens is the Nikon 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 VR II, great range and wonderfully sharp, and its very fast focusing also.

excellent choice.

For a smaller option, Olympus VR-340 pocket camera has a 10x optical and there are a few of similar size with 20x optical that with practice could get some interesting candid shots without anyone knowing you are shooting.

Are you shooting FF or crop? What is your favored subject and from how far away. Are you pro, or hobbyist ?

I use a Nikon 16-85 mounted on my D-300 for my walk around lens. Very lite, fantastic image quality, less intrusive

My walk around is Sigma 17-70, however I have "assigned " myself a single lens to mount on many occasions , fish eye, or 50mm mostly, Bob.

My favorite urban street photography setup is the most excellent Fuji SX 100. Super HQ images and very stealthy/unintimidating in some ways better than the classic Leica.

Nikon 24-120 f/4 on a Nikon D800 is what I use in NY. If I'm wearing two cameras, I use 70-200 and 17-35 f/2.8.

Does that combo scare the hell out of and inhibit people ? In my experience, a street photographer should blend in and be unobtrusive. It seems to me that rig would make you the center of attraction, enough to scare the women, children and horses.

Nah - the horses are OK with them.

Thanks all, you all gave me a good idea of what others do. I'm shooting with one D7000, maybe I just need to be more definitive in my goals when setting out. We don't always find a shot , sometimes the shot finds you!
Thanks
Ed
