I am in the process of getting ready for a trip to Morocco and am considering precisely what equipment to take as the trip will involve both landscape and street photography.

For the wide and mid end of the holy trinity I am thinking of Canon 16-35 L, Tamron 28-70 G2, but I am having some difficulty in choosing between a Canon 70-300 L and a Canon 100-400 IS ii. My primary camera is a 5D mkiv though I am planning to take as a back-up body a Canon 80 D.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

It is hard to imagine not using the 100-400 vs/over the 70-300 - unless size and weight were a BIG concern !

I would go with the 100-400 for more than the obvious focal length increase. It's accepts a 1.4x teleconverter with minimal loss. The 70-300 L has a rear element permitting third party teleconverters only. I own the 70-300L and very pleased with sharpness and build quality but the 100-400 is in another class on it's own.

LensRental considers it one of the best built lenses ever.

I have owned a 70-300 L and currently have a 100-400 L II. The 70-300 is an excellent lens but the 100-400 is superior in nearly every aspect. I think the bigger question would be: Do you really need either of those lenses for street and landscape photography? The Canon 16-35 is considered one of the best landscape lenses Canon has and for street photography the Tamron 28-70 should be more then adequate. Why lug around big, heavy lenses if you don't have to? I took my 70-300 to Hawaii 5 yrs ago and took maybe a dozen shots with it. It ended up just being dead weight in my carry-on. If I wanted more reach then the Tamron I wouldn't even take my 70-200 f/2.8 L II. Too big to have to deal with. I would rent a 70-200 f/4 L. Lightweight with outstanding IQ.

BTW, Hope you have a great trip!

The recommendation from the photo tour organizer, National Geographic, is to bring a long lens, so I was looking at the two long alternatives I own. But for the extra weight, I think you gave me my answer, for which I thank you.

A Nat Geo trip! I envy you! I, and probably a good many others, would be interested in hearing about the experience when you get back, and, of course, seeing bunches of photos.

Thanks. I will do my best. BTW, I am posting my images on www.givefoto.com, the most recent ones from a trip to Newfoundland. I will advise when the Morocco images are posted, I would not wish to burden this site unnecessarily.

The 100 to 400L II is a beast but is easily managed with the addition of the P&C...pistol grip accessory.
You can get them on amazon for about $20 and they go on fast and simple and allow you to get the reach and quality you need without dragging a monopod or worse (tripod).

For me , personally , I would rent a bridge camera with extensive zoom capabilities and forego all that heavy gear and invitation to theft by pick-pockets,etc and conceal my camera easily when not needed so I could enjoy my vacation and not have an unwanted surprise instead. It's your money.

Checked your site and from one old guy to another, very impressed with your postings! If your not an "old guy" then I beg your pardon. Looking forward to seeing your shots of Morocco.

My head is OK, it's just that my body can't keep pace with my head. Have a great trip!
