My opinion only...if I were cropping that picture I would crop heavily from the right almost to the skier...because the sea is not impressive on the right side. Then I would crop from the left a little so as to leave that nasty looking wave.

Beautiful...that's exactly what I was talking about...shows the skier with the heavy surf action.

Win, Win Brent! The full frame captures a very poetic moment.

Brent .., great work as always .... it can actually be a 1-2-3 wall hanger .., where one is a 4x6 the close up ... then a 5x7 of the medium shot and a 8x10 is the full shot showing what so many like .., the wave /water and the surfer vs just the surfer .., all three framed shots would hang in a row on the wall , it’s all a personal like dislike .. your editing technique is now really taking shape ..., with a touch of HDR and then some other stuff ..., great shot ..

I hope I didn’t rain on the parade .., I usually “private message” you .. so I apologize if I overstepped a little with reposting your shot ...I increased the angle of the shot and some other stuff to show off the wave in your shot ...

As You know . I follow your work and had lived and worked where you live and experienced the HB Pier scene .., and we have communicated back and forth .. I felt safe to post ... again I apologize if I went toooo far ..

My take

Can I revise my vote?

If so, then d) none of the choices offered.

What, really, is this image about? Seems to me, it's about the look on the surfer's face. The dude looks concentrated and confident, knowing the whole gig could blow up in his face, literally, in a heart beat (or less). That being the case, I still prefer tight, but want to see a little more wave --or future-- in front of him.

I agree with Cany123. You can tighten up on the surfer, but put him in the top right hand corner, coming down into the wave.

Great action shot, Brent. Contrarian here: I choose "D"...which I created by cropping 2x3 horizontally, placing the surfers head at the upper left "1/3s" intersection. I'll PM you the results.

Which means I like "B" modified.

I'd try taking the full image but cropping so the figure is moved left of center and looking down the wave to create some off center tension with the line of action moving diagonally top right to lower left to increase the dynamic effect of the photo. I'd move the medium crop figure also to the right so he's looking down to the left. Same reasons. The tight crop is great but he's looking out of the frame and leads the eye out of the action too quickly. What happens if you make the frame horizontal instead of vertical?

Thanks CaptainBobBrown.......if you look at the three images, the first is a square, the second is horizontal, and the third is vertical. If you look at the medium one you might be happy with the horizontal look of it.

All three have merit. Why must you choose only one?

Brent, great photos. My heart lets me know which photos do something for me. Tight crop really hits the spot. I leave picking photos apart for others who edit for magazine covers.

Dr. Nikon, no worries about posting on my photos here. I'm pretty kick back about this kind of thing. I know others get annoyed but it's cool with me. Others might get their feathers ruffled up about the over processing of the image you have posted here, but my philosophy is that each photographer has his own style and we all live on the same planet, so let's all get along! lol

Sorry I have not responded to each and every posting here, but the thread got more attention that I had expected. Here are the results as of 6:30pm PST on Sunday July 28th:
A- 17
B- 3
C - 36
D - (none of the other 3) 5
It appears as though the full frame has many more votes. Thanks everyone for your participation.
Just for fun, if you like surfing photos, check out another one I recently posted:

They're all great but I think the third image tells a better story.
