No, even if the owner gives permission to use the picture, he cannot give permission for you to download it from this site. You must enter into a written contract with this site to use anything on this site for personal or commercial purposes. Very few people ever read the Terms of Use for a website, but you should.

Well, I see I am a criminal in the sites eyes and many others.

I am not going away mad. I am just going away.

Thanks for the concise quote mcveed!

Twice on this forum, I've seen photo's that I consider outstanding.[ one was of a day lilly a few months back and the other was a blue nightscape, moon over water, just a few days ago, which when lighten up in Photo Shop looks super ]
My question is this, since these pictures were placed on an open public area, is it OK to download, change, enlarge and display them in my home. The day lilly would look really good enlarged in a fabric frameless setting.
Am I stealing someones work or just showing appreciation for a talent I don't have ?

When you display the photo(s) in your home do you credit the person who posted the photo?

If they are so good that you would like them on your wall, offer to pay the photographer a fair price, it shows respect.

Is it a copyright infringement if you download a picture of the USA flag with white background off an advertisement for a company wishing you a happy memorial day ?

Any of my photos are up for grabs. If anyone can use them go for it . Im not in it for the money any more. Made plenty as a wedding photographer. Time to give back. Dont want to have to give any more to the tax man. He got his share.

What I think I heard from all of you !

1. If you want to copy/download a photo, ask the owner and offer to compensate them, primary because it's the right thing to do.
2. If you are concerned that your property is going to be taken, make it low res. or with a watermark.

The reason I find this fierce ownership so interesting is my other passion in life is fabricating stained glass panels and I have found this clinging to prorietaryship for the most part does not exist in that venue. At shows, most of us will always allow people to photograph our work, knowing that they are going to try to reproduce our sometimes unique methods. If I can help someone get better, why not ?

Thanks to all for your comments and guidance.
What I think I heard from all of you ! br br 1. I... (show quote)

 I feel the same way and that is why I said I would sent someone a higher res image if they ask for it. I have the same feelings with my woodworking. I taught woodworking to 4H children and derived a great pleasure just watching them learn and use any of the techniques I had used.

Yes, it may be "foolish", as someone may want to make a buck from my work, but if I create an image that someone thinks would make their house a more beautiful place, so be it.

Sometimes you have to just show some courtesy by asking, and sometimes it is answered by a yes.

The is one stained glass reference, The attached is an original work,[ not another one like it ] that's been photographed over a dozen times and I'm almost sure has been duplicated several times.
Yes, this is my work, my idea's on how to work the glass, what colors to use and where,[ warm colors on the front sails, cool on the back to add depth, etc ]
I'm quite happy that someone liked it enough to "steal" the concept.

Very nice work,

I say get your camera and try to get your own shot of that lily---It will mean a lot more to you and you can be proud of it hanging on your wall----or just go and buy a similar picture at Kohl's and hang that------------you can learn how to shoot your own on this site

So if that is the case why does this site allow photos to be uploaded then add "DOWNLOAD" below it. Or did I miss something here.

Yes, but do we leave the keys in the car with it running. There is an expectation that we reasonably secure our property. Posting full resolution images is not reasonable protection of your object.

Yes the Internet provides a chain of evidential ownership, but does that provide sufficient protection of continued ownership. We do lock things up for a reason and yes theft is theft.

Fools are mugged and robbed all the time. I think some call that 'business.'

you cant stop a thief, only slow them down... if they want it, they will get it...
