Amazon mistake - a Canon 800 mm lens which sells for $13,000 on sale for $94?

Would be cool if you scored one of these deals:

Sometimes Christmas does really come in July! For a lucky few anyway.
I wonder if the person who posted those sale prices still has a job!

It happened on several things as part of a promo Amazon was having. Items from about $500 to $13,000 getting a price of $94 to $102. It was a glitch that was spotted and corrected in only a short time but in the mean time a fair number of people had placed orders. Amazon is apparently honoring those sales. Actually the publicity and a tax write off for any losses probably made it worthwhile to Amazon.
Just about the time that promo sale started I got an e-mail notification from Amazon but since I wasn't looking for anything at the moment I just deleted it and kept reading my book. From now on if I get any short time promo notices from Amazon I will instantly check cameras, lenses, computers and a few other things I am interested in - JUST IN CASE! but I would imagine it will be a long time before Amazon eases off on check, verify and then repeat at least twice before posting any prices.

Of course there is a faint possibility that Amazon did this on purpose for the publicity and to draw in a lot more shoppers looking for deals. I understand it only happened for 15-30 minutes starting at midnight Amazon HQ time. At that time of night and for that long they may have calculated any "sales" were worth it to them.

I think Amazon may be scamming us. They may be fully aware of the pricing "mistake". Just think of the publicity for next year's Prime Day. $100,000 is a small price to pay for publicity gone viral. It's just another business writeoff. I'm just sayin.

Yes I had this same thought. However I am going to fall back on an old saying:

_ “never suspect malice for that which can be explained by simple incompetence”.

There was no malice here but the saying still applies.

Certainly an amazing story. Also, anyone familiar with high end cameras would know that there is a massive error being made by Amazon.

For me, there is an issue of justice and doing what is right in this situation. For me, I would have a challenging time knowing I paid $94. for a $12,000 lens that was priced in error. Just my thoughts, no judgement on others.

While taking advantage of a mistake in an advertised price may seem to be dishonest and distasteful to many, the justice of it is often a different story. More often then not courts have ruled that the advertised price, even if incorrect, is the legitimate price and no action can be taken against the purchaser.
