Another vote for GoodSync. I use a few automatic backup methods. However, GoodSync can back up only the folders you want (e.g. "Pictures") to an external drive. Just plug in the drive and GoodSync does the rest. See http://asktimgrey.com/2015/04/17/backup-recommendation/

Excellent suggestion - there are a couple of other sync programs out there too. It is important to emphasize SYNC - ie. they will not only update by adding added files but will update by also deleting deleted ones. Also most of these sync programs will sense when an external device is added - be it source or target ie. camera or external hardrive - and immediately begin the programmed sync operation.

Also - on a more manual note - the program ROBOCOPY will do mirror syncing too. I use it in a BATch file do update desktop to SD cards and then from SD card to laptop - and back - as well as to external drives.

From other posts, it appears the OP has Lightroom. Forgive me if I misunderstood. But if he has lightroom he can automate it as par t of his import.

Seems that might just be too easy!

I have my photos on drive E. I would also like to save them to my portable drive G. Is there a way to automatically have them save to the second drive?

Questions:

Sounds like you have Windows. Do you mean save to G: INSTEAD OF to E:? Or save to G: AND E:?

Where/what is the E:drive?

The lack of info in the question does not allow an answer. Everyone is just guessing.

I use a program (or an app!) called SyncBack. You can syncronize 2 drives so that all changes (add, delete, update) are copied to the older version, or backup a second drive to the first. You specify which folder(s). It can do unattended scheduled operations or on demand.

Based on the original query, duplicating to any drive or series of folders can be achieved in several ways including LR, GoodSync or Backsync with probably several more options not mentioned.

It doesn't sound as if source and/or target are relevant or make much difference.

I use Acronis Backup software, but there are others; (Easytodo, for example.) The programs can be set to make periodic and regular backups of either files or disks at a predetermined time. You could set it to back up the folder or drive on which you store your photos.

I have used Acronis for years to make weekly backups of my operating disk. It has saved my "butt" several times over the years. In its early days, Acronis was user unfriendly, but it has improved greatly over the years. Their Tech Support is excellent.

I organize my photos by year and store all years but the present on an second internal hard drive. My current years photos are stored on my C drive, which is backed up weekly, using Acronis.

Based on the original query, we don't know what the poster wants to do.
