Start reading about lenses on the internet, or photo mags.
Most name brands such as Camon or Nikon are very good. Some knock offs are good for the begginner, unless your a pro,and need 1000.00 lenses but from your question I don't think u r, or u would know about lenses..I have used Canon camers and lenses for 30 years, and the quality is excellent..

as a general rule the "kit lenses" are the lesser quality lenses..the "good" lenses are a lot more costly but last a really long time and can be used on any camera body you buy later, as long as you stay with whatever brand you start with, which is a good reason to start with one of the leaders in the field like Canon or Nikon because they have a very good selection of quality lenses..which in my opinion is more important than the body itself..good luck

I've always had good luck with Canon lenses. Look for low numbers ie 1:1.4 for a 50mm or as low as you can afford for telefoto.

popphoto.com has a buyers guide for cameras and lenses. the lab at popular photography magazine has an excellant reputaation for accurate testing.

I read reviews, ask fellow photographers their take on a lens and then I rent it to give it a test run.
I only have 3 lens in my line up, but my system has saved me from purchasing a lens that I would end up listing for sale or sitting in my bag un-used.
I rented the 135 2.0L and the 70-200 4.0L, before I settled on the 24-70 2.8L, I didn't fall in love with the first two and I ended up with the 24-70 which is on my camera 95% of the time. I LOVE that lens. It's AMAZING <3
