A millenial here -

And I say Nikon or Canon!! :D

In seriousness though, my first smartphone was a Note 4 and it had an excellent camera with adjustable settings. I loved it. Last weekend a buddy and I went up north to Tettegouche State Park and his iFohn (sorry, I'm a Samsung/ Android guy) spat out some really nice images. The latest Sammy cameras have been great too.

Given that you have to use what it's attached to, get a phone first, camera second - or Canon/ Nikon/ Sony/ Fuji/ etc first, LG flipper second and put your money in to glass for the first.

To some extent it also depends on what apps are available for each platform which can further expand the camera's functionality.

Millennials,

I know, the usual battle is between Nikon and Canon, but this is the 21st Century. I don't need to hear from the gray panthers. This is a different toy. Will those who know please state their reasons for using one smartphone/camera over another? Granted the technology changes rapidly but what camera is better today?

Probably the best test and info site for phones (camera, lenses etc) is DXOMark web site. They test many of the latest releases. https://www.dxomark.com/ Lots of great info.

I am not in the younger crowd and am happy to add my experiences even if you have said to stay away. I am not sure why you would eliminate the gray panthers to begin with.

I have an iPhone and love it for photography. I have taken photos with it such as macro flies mating that, while I could have gotten somewhat better with my Nikon and micro lens, it wasn't with me. I also like the cell phone for taking photos when I am hunting and fishing. I won't carry my Nikon or Leicas while wading in a waist deep rushing river as I don't want them in the drink, so to speak. The iPhone works great for those pictures.

Something to consider if I am reading your question correctly is whether you are looking for cell phone experience OR specific experience between the iPhone and the Samsung as to which is the better phone for photos. I could not answer that as I started with iPhone years ago and only once tried another type, again years ago. It is only iPhone experience for me.

NIKON! This gray panther is reminding you that this is a photography site that most people will agree that if you desire to take real photos then you should use a camera, not a telephone. If you want to know who the winner is between iphone or samsung,, you should find out which one looks best to you.

Check out Emil Pakarklis on YouTube for the potential in iPhones and note that advanced photographers on this site get acceptable 16x24 prints from these new cameras. Smartphone is such a misnomer. Their telephone functions are so limited compared to their multimedia abilities.

This is a photography forum, not a camera forum, a photo is a photo, no matter how it is taken.

I have a Galaxy s10. My wife has an iPhone xs. I am 72 she is 70. They are both pretty good. The Galaxy being android gives you more control. For example in pro mode you get both jpeg and raw saved. There are other areas. If you know something about photography I thing the Galaxy is better.

My normal camera is Nikon Z7. My wife shoots strictly with the Iphone.

Just like Nikon cameras, most phone cameras use Sony sensors. Some things to consider is sensor size and how it is constructed. Backlit? Layed? MP?

Thank you Robertjerl,

I was hoping to have some personal experiences shared.

I belong to a camera club and we have an annual competition open to the public. My boss took a landscape photo with her IphoneX last summer in Colorado. It was a great photo. I printed it and entered in the Landscape category. There were 59 entries, hers was the only taken with a cell phone and she took !st, FIRST, place.

Thanks guys; I enjoyed reading al of your experiences with your assorted phones and I learned even more about them than I knew ,previously. I still carry an old flip phone that is rarely "ON" and only for emergency use, but I am becoming more enticed with the features these new babies offer and I might have to change my point of view as the price-points are declining due to market overloads. The new Motorola track Phone is a very attractive model with no real monthly fees and total One-time ownership and only minute purchases and or APT additions if warranted. My little T-Mobile flipper cost only $130.00/year as it is only used when I make a call and stays off 99% of the time......I'm Cheap !
Thanks guys; I enjoyed reading al of your experien... (show quote)

My wife still has her flip-phone and does NOT want a smart phone.

Me, I really like the apps! - Google Maps, messaging, grocery list, tides, GPS, weather, Firefox, Flight Aware, Photographer's Ephemeris, Camera, photo albums, sky map, Memos, ...
Most convenient and handy!!!

I only have an IPhone 7s and my wife has a Samsung S8. I really can't say which is better. I don't have the newest ones from either company. Reading a lot of review it seems the better one is the one that has a lot of software processing like faked shallow DOF. Skin smoothing etc.. They don't test the camera for lens sharpness, distortion, noise level (without noise reduction in software).

I have an I phone 10xr and believe me it takes real fine photos

I checked the mirror. My hair is thinning and gray. 🤪. Get rid of all this digital junk and go back to a real camera. Maybe an 8x10 or larger! 🦕
