I realize that in general, airlines employ larger aircraft for flying between Maui and CONUS, so this REMINDER may be moot. But lately, I have observed on my flights taken on major U.S. carriers between major hubs, that the airlines have routinely been obliging passengers, at the last minute, to check their "roller" cases below whilst carryons without rollers remain with the passenger in the cabin.

This has happened to me recently. I pulled out the backpack straps and carried it on the plane. I've gotten in the habit of doing that now just so I won't be asked to check it again.

For travel, I just use an ordinary roller bag for the valuable equipment (camera, lenses, flash). It is plenty strong enough and I pad it out with some towels. Other items like the tripod goes into checked luggage. One thing is that if your flight includes a short jump into or out of a small airport, the overhead bins of many of the smaller commuter jets are not large enough to fit a standard roller bag and they will often insist that you check it before boarding. You will want a back up plan if they announce that. Fortunately I had a backpack with me, and I managed to jam my precious cargo into that and get it on the plane with me.
