I am sorry , I have already gotten many hints, but someone confused the issue again .
1. It is my understanding that 4K means resolution ONLY. So my Nikon 7100 shoots even jpegs in 14.5 MB which is 6000 x 4000 <- So it is 4k Quality ....right? Photo salesman tried to tell me that 7100 does not provide 4K.
2. I have bought a 4K LG monitor an tested the quality with a laptop 730 and with a lap top 1920 resolution. I have not seen almost any difference. I also had a 4K game laptop - the difference almost zero.
OK, maybe my picture was not 4K ...but the resolution count is!!
Am I wrong?
3. If I do not intent to do editing the movie (only zoom to see the pictures quality) do I really need 4K laptop? Somebody told me that I do not need 4K gaming computer (graphic card) and a normal HDMI cable. ???
Thank you and sorry for asking again Miro
I think he is talking about video. This is from the Nikon website: the D7100 achieves exceptional cinematic reproduction and quality. Record in several high-definition formats: 1080@50/60i, 1080@24/25/30p or 720@30/60p. Dual SD card slots give you additional recording time, and an all new 60i function enables smooth playback on HDTVs or external monitors.
Yes, many people gave me advice .....on video. BUT I do not intend to do any video. So I would be happy with any lover=cheaper laptop feeding my 4K monitor. M
The laptop video output must be able to output 4K otherwise a 4K monitor does you no good.
OK, now you have me confused. 4K refers to video; recording a 4K video and viewing it.
I should know better, but I'll try. "4K" and "UHD" is a video format that is 3840 x 2160 pixels. Newer TVs do that. Older do 1920x1080. Really old ones do a lot less. 3840 x 2160 is about 8 megapixels. Your Nikon shoots at about 24 megapixels. MB or megabytes has nothing to do with pixel dimensions.
Your salesman is right. Your camera is limited to "HD" or 1920x1080 pixels for video. Although it can take 6000x4000 pixel stills, it won't record that in video. So, it is not "4K Quality".
Don't try to mix video concepts with stills concepts.

4k is for video only, and has no bearing on Digital photographs. One of the highest resolution digital video cameras, the $22,000 Red Dragon, shoots 4k but at about 19 Mp.
If you want to get max resolution for 4k videos, then you should get a 4k laptop. But at 66, my eyes cannot really see the difference.
I am sorry. I somehow do not do the right English. You all thought about video .......NO.... I will do the still pictures ONLY .
The question boils down to : Does the new 1920 x 1080 laptop deliver 4K quality PICTURE to 4K monitor thru the regular HDMI cable? OR do I really have to have 4K laptop (gaming graphic card)?
Sorry & thank you. M
4K is a video specification/parameter.
Not directly related to still images.

Let me see if I can say it plainer. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 4K QUALITY PICTURE.
You can use a regular monitor for still pictures, no problem.

"The question boils down to : Does the new 1920 x 1080 laptop deliver 4K quality PICTURE to 4K monitor thru the regular HDMI cable?" Probably not. You will be looking at your pictures, regardless of the screen's resolution, at 1920x1080.

I would contact the the computer manufacture & ask to know for sure. Good luck.

First off, 4k is a display resolution.
It is worth noting that in the photography world 4k resolution had been exceeded by by digital camera stills before 4k was even a thing. The video part of digital cameras had to catch up to the new 4k standard. So today you will see digital cameras marketed as 4k and they are indeed referring to the video resolution. (Because the video meets the 4k display standard)
Second, (I assume this is a Windows laptop) you will have to set your display settings as Extended (not Mirrored), and designate the 4k monitor as your primary (1) display. You can then set Display 1 to 3840x2160 and Display 2 to 1920x1080.
However you will be limited by your laptop and Windows version on how good this will all look and how well it will perform.
