If you have the money the Leica SL is a great choice although heavy to carry around.

Some cameras come with GPS & Wi Fi built-into them but they're not inexpensive. Is that what you would need ? Not sure about single add-on units and who makes one....sorry.

How practical are taggers that work in conjunction with a smart phone? There are many photo destinations with no cell reception so a tagger that works off of satellites would be preferable.

GPS doesn't require a connection on a phone. I can use Google Maps in offline mode and know exactly where I am. A connection is only needing for routing and some searches.

I use my android phone to create a log file and then synchronize the shots with it in Windows. There are number of free applications available. It takes very little time and effort to do all this. The only disadvantage is that sometimes I forget to start the GPS app on the phone :(

It seems obvious that a device should be available that attaches to the hot shoe, uses blue tooth to connect to a smart phone, get GPS data and time stamp via an app, and apply the data to a photo when it is shot. It would be better than a dedicated reciever
like GP-E2 or post processing. But I can't find anything like this. Has anyone seen such a device?

I use a "Precision GP-1". Fits on the hot shoe, connects with my d3200. Downloads into the Lightroom Map module which pinpoints the position on a google map. Clicking the position marker on the map brings up the photo. Quick and easy. Takes the camera battery down faster when on.

I use a GP-1 from Nikon. It attaches to the hot shoe, or a strap adapter if using flash. It receives signals from GPS satellites and embeds the location in the EXIF data associated with the exposure when made. No need for a phone. Why complicate the system by having to add another component like a cell phone?

Similar. I use iPhone's "Geotag Photos Pro 2". I have it send the compact .gpx locations file to my Dropbox. Use Lightroom to attach positions. An extra step over an integrated system? Yes. But, needs no extra gear over what I already carry with only slightly more iPhone battery consumption.

I have been using a GMAX-EOS for a couple of years with my Canons. It works great and I've never had a problem with it.

Thanks to all the responders. I'll probably go with the 2 step approach and hope Canon does create the 90D ... with integrated, low power GPS. (Broadcom has a new chip that seems like a good solution)

I have tried pen and paper in my hot shoe but it doesn't work.
I do however use an SD card with WiFi to GeoTag my photos, it works every time, I have been using this method for years so it's not a new idea.

When I use my iPhone to record my GPS positions, I verify the correct world time zone, including Daylight Savings Time, then synchronize the iPhone's and Camera's clocks. Also, at the beginning and/or end of a track, take a photo of something at a known position.

This looks like it will only update photos on desktop / laptop. Is there anything as good that runs on Android tablet? I generally transfer from 70D to tablet each day for first pass on selecting photos and don't travel with laptop.
