It seems obvious that a device should be available that attaches to the hot shoe, uses blue tooth to connect to a smart phone, get GPS data and time stamp via an app, and apply the data to a photo when it is shot. It would be better than a dedicated reciever
like GP-E2 or post processing. But I can't find anything like this. Has anyone seen such a device?

It seems what you want is simply to tag your photos with GPS. Which camera? Depending on which camera, it may be available to tag simpler than you described.

Canon 70D, and maybe 90D if it ever happens. Nothing will be simpler than zero steps but I might have to live with an alternative.

When Frank said "simpler" is because some cameras have GPS built in so they can tag the photos with no steps :)
No idea about 70D or 90D

What I meant by simpler is some cameras, mine is a Nikon 7100 have a separate unit that you can run a cord from it to one of the ports on a camera, set it up and then it's automatic you don't need to use a phone or anything else.

When I get back home I'll do some research on the 70 and 90.

It also has a remote shutter.

Yes, I know about this device. Expensive, requires charging, and slow to acquire GPS signal. I want a device that simply uses blue tooth to get GPS info from my phone each time a picture is taken. Conceptually simple, but I haven't found one.

Don't require charging, it uses 2 AA batteries. Slow? It works at Intervals: Every 1, 5, 10, 15, or 30 sec, or every 1, 2, or 5 min. Unless your in burst mode shooting several fps, it's plenty fast.....

Try Geotag Pro app on your phone. Only $17 but it adds a step to your post processing.
