The Nikon crop factor is 1.5 so your lenses will have the equivalent field of view of the focal length x 1.5. The focal length does not change only the field of view because the image coming through the lens is hitting the smaller cropped DX sensor.

Correct I understand nothing can change the optical mm the lens came with from the factory. The 1.4 teleconverter is an expensive piece of glass @$479.99 it will turn the 500mm into 700MM regardless of the film size or sensor. Visually when a person looks thru a DX camera the focal lenght appears longer as your eye is seeing a smaller portion of the Full Frame Lens. Any way I am looking forward to trying out the new lense and converter this weekend and hopefully will have some photos to show soon. Attached is a Scissor Tailed Flycatcher I shot with a DX 50 to 300mm Nikon in Granbury, TX last Fall. Set on 300mm Overcast day no catchlight in the eye disappointed me a little. Eye shine added with Fireworks.

I just ordered the Nikon 200- 500 from B&H I have old F3 body and a D3100 Next Paycheck want a Full Frame D750. Will the the D3100 make the Full Frame Lens 200-500 effectively a 280mm-700mm zoom on the DX sensor D3100 body?

Since the crop factor of a Nikon is 1.5, the lens will have a FOV of a 300-750mm on a full frame.

Yes he did...

The teleconverter will change the focal length and the 1.4 will cost you a stop of light. Personally I think the best teleconverter is the one made by the lens manufacturer. I have a 2x for my Canon. That takes 2 stops of light away.

The other issue with the teleconverter is whether the camera can auto focus with it and how many of the focus points will work with it. Canon prints a table in their camera manuals defining what focus points work with what lenses.

I got out my calculator and the new lens 200mm-500mmzoom with the 1.4 tele converter attached to my DX D3100 camera body should yield an effective to the eye 1050mm or 21 x magnification. If there is enough light I am hoping for some good bird portraits.

The Lens I ordered (AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR) and the (TC-14E III) lists the following on the Autofocus is available only with cameras that offer f/8 support. These include the Z 7, Z 6, D5, D500, D4/D4S, Df, D850, D810/D810A, D800/D800E, D750, D600/D610, D7100, D7200 and D7500. For cameras that do not support f/8, teleconverters can be used without autofocus. So it Looks Like I need to order the D750 or a D7500 pretty soon. Or I will be using Manual Focus on the combination!

Manual focus at F8 on a DSLR on moving targets will be a challenge. You might find some of Arthur Morris videos on YouTube interesting. He shot Canon, but I thought I heard he switched to Nikon...not sure... He has/had some nice Canon glass for sure...

We've had people bring them on our workshops. They'r not bad, but I wouldn't choose one over the WH-200. They work, but the WH-200 just seems to work better in a fast paced scenario, at least from what I've observed.

Also, remember that tripods and heads cost a LOT more when you buy -> discover you need something better -> buy again -> discover you need something better -> and finally buy the right head / legs that you wanted at the start :)

Some people are better off to “Buy Once, Cry Once”...

I have shot with both - I find my Manfrotto 393 together with a Hejnar Arca-Swiss compatible clamp is just as functional and flexible as a Wimberley (or knockoff) style gimbal. I use it in cradle mode and it has performed flawlessly for me over the past 13 yrs. Funny thing is, that it is marketed as a monopod long lens support. Go figure. . .
