Good job! Looks like fun! (I'm not a Polka guy, but love watching folks have fun.... Mollie B, have seen her show on RFD TV).

Note: When you take the SD card out of your DSLR, leave the door open to remind you to put one back in, swap out (so there is always one in there) or put a sticky note on the camera (sticking out of the card door works). None of us ever make that mistake, so use some sort of reminder!!

My exposure to Polka was as a young kid in Nebraska/Kansas/Iowa (Dad was on assignment there for a couple year stretch) and we would go to those family style Beer Gardens on Friday/Saturday night, and they would have a Polka Band, or mixed musical style bands and I was always taken by the farm folks love of Polka bands/dancing. And you know what they say - In Heaven there is no beer!!!!!

I didn't grow up with polka music. I grew up playing and singing gospel and C&W with my family but i grew to have an appreciation for polka and I love to dance to it. These festivals are very much a family affair and the kids are encouraged to get out and dance as well. I hesitate taking picture of children that are not my family or I would have included some of those as well. The kids are a lot of fun to watch and so cute.

Thanks Jim! There are some great photo ops in Ennis. Lots of old Victorian and Craftsman homes, several old churches and a picturesque down town. You should also check out WestFest which is coming up Labor Day weekend. It is in the town of West off I 35 between Dallas and Waco. It is a small Czech community and WestFest celebrates that culture with traditional costumes and dances plus great Czech food and plenty of beer.

There are lots of other small towns around the DFW area that great to shoot. I love getting out and exploring them.

Yes Kenie there are lots of opportunities to shoot around DFW. I'm well aware of Texas small town charm. My Dad was from Wills Point, then moved to Scurry after I left home and my Daughter now lives in Waxahachie. So many shooting opportunities and so little time.

Linda you would think it would be very colorful but the inside shots were bad lighting situations, high ceilings and florescent lights and beige everywhere. They looked better in b&w with the contrast pushed. The dancers were under a tent in shadows with a very bright sun. Again it just looked better in b&w. The accordion player was actually good in color because of the stage spotlights but I decided to stay with the theme. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

LOVE #3 in B&W with pushed contrast. Looks like a 1940's movie still promo shot using Super XX. B&W is the safe way to go with amateurish stage lighting involving mis-matched color temperatures in the lamps and "creative" use of gels. Nice work!

I was so looking forward to shooting at this Polka festival. We go every year and have a blast. This year I was taking my DSLR camera that I have been learning to use with such diligence and I had plans for some great street and people photography. Well, my first boneheaded move and probably not the last. I forgot to put my SD card back in my camera. At least Canon warns you if you try and take a photo without a card. As they say, the best camera is the one you have with you so cell phone it was. We still had a great time and I did come away with a few photos. I hope you enjoy!

Some very nice photos.
Makes a good case for dumping the DSLRs.
But a better example that if you are going to use a DSLR own one with two card slots and never take both cards out at the same time. I have never run out of storage space on a shoot since buying two slot cameras and many 32GB cards.
