I ordered a kit to (invisibly) mark all my camera equipment, laptop, jewelry, etc. It is called Protech DNA. http://protechdna.com It is free to order (you must prove that you have homeowner's insurance and the insurance company pays for it).

You have to register your stuff online also. You can see the mark with a blue light. Police departments and pawn shops are using it. If something turned in that has a protech dna mark, they just go to the web site and find the owner. Anyway, if you are interested, go to the website.

I've read about that. Please let me (us) know what you think of it.

Well, I've marked everything I needed to mark. I bought a blue light to check. I guess I wouldn't know how it works unless something gets stolen. I have insurance, but I feel that it's just one more added security, especially on jewelry pieces that can't be replaced.

Right.
Was it easy to put on?

Yes, very easy. It's liquid and you dab it on with a little sponge.

When I leave my gear at a hotel room I secure it by hiding it under a coat or a few worn underpants. Sofar nothing ever happened.

I used something like this 40 years ago on my old Olympus OM10 gear. It has never been stolen, so I don't know if it increases your chance of recovery. What it does do, is make your gear pretty worthless if you try to sell or trade it.

It only works if the buyer knows to check for the invisible dot.

There was a post a while back. It said the insurance companies were needed to get on board to help finance the gear. Pawn shops and other place dealing in used gear were also a necessary part of the puzzle. If everyone does their part it just might help.

I'd rather there be some better deterrent to keep the stuff from getting stolen in the first place.

Interesting idea and hope it works. Awareness of this procedure is needed throughout the photo world.

Back in the day, photographers very often engraved their name and Social Security # on the piece of equipment. I recently bought an engraved immaculate 135mm F3.5 AI-S Nikkor lens for $10! Of course, resale values did drop as few people wanted stuff with someone else's info on it!

Cheers! Be well. Ed
