I've got my equipment listed on my homeowners; it gives me peace of mind.

It's also not a bad idea to leave the TV on as well, makes it sound like someone's home.

In addition to displaying the Do Not Disturb sign with a small strip of gaf tap to secure it I'll sometimes put an index card with "Day Sleeper" next to the Do Not Disturb sign. I still check to see that it's where I put it when I return.

I travel a lot, especially to Latin America. I keep my gear in locked Pelican cases, then use a light weight cable lock to lock the cases to the bed or bathroom fixture. At least that would force a would be thief to carry wire cutters and steal the entire case, rather than just placing a camera or tablet in their purse. My guess is that most thefts are impulsive rather than "planned operations".
Do not know if my method is a deterrent or not, but in over 300 nights in various Neotropical hotels over the last 5 years, have not any thefts or losses of any kind.
I guess my goal is to make my gear more difficult to steal than the gear in another room.

I’m going to NY this summer and I want to take my DSLR. Any suggestions about leaving the camera in the hotel when I don’t want to carry it?

Put it in the SAFE if they have one in the room.

Actually thanks to very effective policing, NYC is pretty safe. Per 100,000 people, I’d say it has a lower crime rate than most cities in the south. Some of this progress is being undone by the current administration....but I have walked around NYC with a camera quite a lot with no problems. Does crime occur? Yes. Is it rampant? No. Anyhoo, when I am out I either leave it in the room safe or hide it somewhere and hope for the best.

There are two kinds of thieves. An opportunist and a professional. Most thieves will simply grab valuables that are unattended and easily grabbed. A hotel safe or Pacsafe solutions prevent this type of thief.

A committed professional thief will get your stuff given the opportunity. The hotel room lock, the hotel room safe or basic locks will be ineffective. Diminishing the opportunity is key. I never travel with anyone else to my room floor in a hotel elevator when I have my camera gear. Paranoid but if they don’t know where you are it is hard to steal your stuff. I never go to my room door with someone else in the hall. Many hotels don’t have hotel safes anymore, but that is another possibility.

Note that all hotel with safes can be opened by certain staff with the "secret" password for those guests who might forget their password. While I used these safes all the time, they often do not hold much gear. When I travel with a lot of gear, I will tend to place the most expensive optics or bodies in the safe.

I also place in all my camera bags a small GPS tracker, that allows some degree of chance of possibly finding where at the least bag is located.

When I travel in the US, I often have two large bags that between them can have in excess of $35K in gear. However, due to their size, I can't just keep them with me all the time. So, I have two choices - lock them in the car or the hotel. Which I pick depends on where I'm going and how risky I think one is over the other.

In some cases, for example if I'm going shopping for something in a "shady" area, I tend to favor leaving my gear in the hotel room. Especially if it's later in the day and the cleaning staff has packed it in for the day. I also try to stay in nicer hotels. While nothing is ever for sure, I have found that most hotel staff really isn't trying to find ways to steal you stuff - they just want to get their job done and get home.

On the other hand, if I'm going someplace where I'm not as worried about theft (like to a restaurant where I can see the car from the window after a shoot), I'll leave it in the car. If I do happen to be in a not-so-nice hotel in a not-so-nice area, I will often keep the cameras locked in the car when I'm out rather than back in the room.

It really comes to down to which location I think presents the least risk.

I also make an effort to not make it obvious that I have camera gear - I only take it out when I'm on location and always put it away before I return to the hotel. The fewer eyes that see it, the better.

That, and I have good insurance :)

Still, in all the years I've traveled, I've been very fortunate and never had a single item stolen. (For perspective, I'm on the road for over half the year this year).
When I travel in the US, I often have two large ba... (show quote)

Adding to your comment about leaving gear in the hotel room after the cleaning staff has finished for the day: Whenever I leave the room for any reason I put the "Do not disturb" card on the door. I don't know how effective this is in reality, but have never had a problem in all the years I've traveled.

I haven't had a problem in hotels with camera gear, electronics or anything else. I usually leave it in it's travel bag and only occasionally put it in the closet. Most employees are honest and those that aren't don't want to risk their jobs from complaints. The only thing I've missed in a hotel room was a charger - and I forgot to pack that when I left. (by the way, check with the front desk if you've arrrived without your charger - they usually have a box of them in lost and found.)

I think the suggestion of using the hotel safe is the most secure. Its too bad that the world has progressed to it's present state, although maybe it has always been like this. I don't consider New York to be a safe place to go wandering around in anyway. Or maybe, being from the South I just don't trust northerners. (:

Check out Pac Safes. Use in conjunction with any other protective measures, in hotel and car.
