I thought I'd post some of my shots that showed various sides of the military experience. The photo of Pvt. Abrams was taken by an uncredited U.S. Army Signal Corps photographer. I think Abrams was captured when the Nazi SS tanks sprang the Battle of the Bulge surprise attack. The battle raged from December 16 to January 11. Near Malmedy, Belgium. on Dec. 17, 1944, an SS unit lined up captured Americans in a snow field and massacred 115 helpless men by machine gunning. When the battle finally ended, the German casualties reportedly totaled about 120,000 (some 80,000 killed or wounded, 40,000 taken prisoner). The Americans lost 66,421 men, of whom 18,416 were taken prisoner by the enemy. Pvt. Abrams apparently was one of them. The senselessness of war was never better proven than in this single tragedy.

Our family has never been one that visits graves, or "celebrates" Memorial Day as such. It doesn't mean we don't appreciate or forget our loved ones who served on our behalf. It does mean our family is so scattered that it's not possible. Our memories and story-telling are the way we salute their service. There are many ways to remember and these represent one unique (I think) memorial. Along the walkway to one of the lighthouses in the area are stones with names of loved ones - some military, some not. You have probably also seen benches in beautiful "sit spots" with the name of a loved one who used to enjoy that view. When I see these memorials, I wonder about the person - who were they, what did they do, etc. It also makes me wonder what someone would say about me or how they would choose to remember me. So, I guess Memorial Day, for me, is more than just a Salute to Military service - it's a reflection on the art of living until life on earth comes to an end. It's focused remembering of many who have shaped my life - and I am grateful.
