Really?? Well, that's CT for you. No income taxes, but you pay personal property taxes every year...I used to be surprised by the yearly tax bill for my car.

When I managed a small business here in NY, I got to keep part of the sales tax remittance. Tax was 8%, I "only" had to remit 7.5% (I think) to the state.

LOL, I guess you're also not familiar with our long standing income tax! I also pay several hundred dollars a year for motor vehicle taxes and if I don't, they withhold registration. We don't miss much here.

In the 90's, when doing retail in NY, on occasion I also a to pay a county tax, depending on where I was.

I pay taxes every year. The big picture is my frustration at the way our taxes are used.We have
stripped the funds for public education and doubled down on more military toys. Not supported
the veterans that have bravely given service. Let the roads, infrastructure, bridges, water supply
first responders and fireman lacking support. Made students loan victims of lenders to try and get education.
Fought wars and military action not formally approved by congress which is the law.
And are stripping out healthcare from a large group of Americans.

Now before someone tells me this post does not belong here. Maybe we should not worry
about this and think about the truth of taxes. Some do good most taxes are applied for the
betterment of a few people.

Well said! Not PC as some here prefer, but very well said.

I have an on-line sales business, and even though this new tax law affects my business I think it is a good thing!

Imagine you have a bricks and mortar camera shop offering personal service that cannot be matched on-line. You pay knowledgeable staff to keep the doors open, and many other high expenses, like rent, liability insurance and business taxes. How in the world can you compete with on-line discounted sales that offer no personal service and knowledge??

EVER WONDER WHERE ALL THE HELPFUL CAMERA SHOPS WENT???

You haven't been in CT for some time my friend. The state takes an income tax, personal property tax, real property tax, sales tax, use tax, gas tax, tolls are going in, income tax is going up, sales tax is being expanded, and they're looking at Mary Jane for tax revenue. The last state in the nation in terms of recovery from the 2008 era due to guess what, taxes...

Seems due to a new law companies are now required to charge sales tax on online purchases for out of state buyers. Anyone know of ways to skirt that? B&H is offering a credit card that pays your sales tax for you but I'm leery about getting another card online because of the personal information you have to give up, possible hidden fees etc. Also I need another CC like a hole in the head.

We all knew that the time would come for all online sellers to report and tax all online sales to other states. I applied for this CC and can tell you that it's offered by Synchrony Bank which I have several other accounts with. I have one with a tire store, a drone company, Amazon, and now with B&H. I've never had a single problem using one of Synchrony Banks cards. But be careful because they charge very high interest and it won't be worth it to save money on tax if you are going to pay down the debt monthly. If you use this card, you'd better plan on paying down the debt all at once before the date an interest charge would be imposed.

My My My... What a robust conversation I seem to have started... Let's see how else can I stir the pot?
Trump or Biden? Border Wall? China tariffs? ( it's a joke ya all)... Since I've posted this I've been called a tax evader and cheater.. unbelievable.. to clarify what started this, I've been looking for a "coveted" Sony FE 24mm 1.4 lens that no one that I can find has in stock. They are constantly of back order so I contacted B&H and they were the only ones that had some coming in this month so I gave them a CC# ignorant of the fact that they now charge sales tax and they sent me an invoice that included sales tax. I had never had to deal with that before and was very surprised, so I cancelled the order because I didn't want another CC. As I'm finding out that now is the norm. I was simply trying to put a feeler out there that perhaps by chance some dealer that someone might have dealt with in some state is in an area where the sales tax situation doesn't apply... I usually buy on ebay where as yet I have never had to pay sales tax. I'll stick with ebay. Is that evasion? I think not. The only problem is the lens I'm looking for, sellers want more than the sales tax (law of supply and demand)... guess I'll have to go with a Sigma, lesson learned. I was only looking for an above board way to not pay sales tax... thank you for all your responses.

B&H or whoever collects your state sales tax not their state sales tax. So it's going to be difficult to find where sales tax doesn't apply. It'll be coming to ebay too at some point.

Oregon has no state sales tax. People from Idaho, Northern California, and Washington shop in Oregon. No businesses in Oregon charge an Oregon state sales tax on anything purchased on their premises IN Oregon. I have never heard that there has been a change on this and when I was in banking, no car dealers charged a sales tax on purchases made in Oregon, no matter what the sales tax laws were in any state of residence, if the buyer paid for and took delivery in Oregon.

Oreonian have resisted successfully any attempt at sales tax in any form for decades after watching surrounding states promise other tax break in exchange for sales tax, and then getting screwed out of the deal after allowing passage of sales tax.

Likewise, most of Oregon has no DEQ inspection in a majority of the state. I live in Central Oregonand have never paid state sales tax, nor had any vehicles shut down for emission control standards.

Some local sales taxes exist, and the NW part of Oregon inspects and can shut down your vehicles for pollution standards not met IN THOSE AREAS.

Oregon voters are hardened on this issue. I am 76 and never seen a successful battle to add sales taxes statewide on this issue. And last year three very high money campaigns were fought to get the foot in the door on some very unique issue descriptions. Again Oregon said F U politicians and lobbyists. Almost every voter in Oregon remembers when Idaho voters "rolled over" 5 decades ago based on promises of reduced personal income taxes, which never took place.

Speaking strictly as a consumer and B&H customer, I signed up for the Payboo card last week and have already saved the equivalent of the NYS tax on nearly $600 worth of products. As I don't buy anything that I'm not going to pay for when the bill comes in, for me personally using this card is a no brainer. It's like getting an additional 8.75% discount on my purchase.

My feeling is that from a business perspective this card is a masterstroke and B&H has once again tilted the playing field in favor of our customers in taking the sting out of the high cost of state sales tax.

For more details on this card, feel free to contact Henry Posner our official spokesperson, or follow his instructions in a previous UHH thread as quoted below.

"See www.bandh.com/payboo. You do pay the tax, just as you did yesterday and last week. What's different if you choose to use this program is that B&H returns the amount of the tax paid so net-net it hasn't come out of your pocket. Technically you paid the tax as you're supposed to."

All the best.

You get no vote then. You can't keep your promise.
When I run I will keep my promise. I will do the job to the best of my ability (which isn't a lot but I don't comment on this) and all I want in return is the pension when the term is over.

It's only fair that online sellers collect sales tax for my state. I buy online for the convenience, not to avoid sales tax.

I am pretty confident that I can get on the phone with B&H, or an online chat perhaps, and get a level of knowledge on a wider range of products than my local shop could ever hope to provide. There is a reason businesses grow bigger, because they do it better and probably cheaper...
