I have recently been contacted by a couple of different shops indicating the lens was in stock. Knowing how rare they are, at this point, I took the first available. It seems they are coming into the US in very small “dribs and drabs”, but can be obtained if one is persistent.
I really like mine although having it only a few weeks. Light and sharp, it is easily handheld and the 500 length, unlike many zooms having this maximum focal length is sharp.

Yes, good choice. I own one and have been pleased with it.

Outstanding lens; tac sharp throughout the entire focal length.

I love mine and use the handle that attaches to the tripod ring (shown above) and get good results. The handle allows me to brace the weight of the lens against my rib cage, much like an offhand rifle hold.

I have 1 and the VR is very good & image quality is also very good it's about a 3-4 lb. lens it can be handheld but I would suggest some kind of support like a monopod or a over the should sling strap I use a black rapid. but you can't go wrong you can get them for about 11-13 hundred U.S. dollars. Still it is lighter than a lot of supper tallies. I think it is better than the Sigma or Tamron but they are close, the auto focus is better on the Nikon.

Outdoor with good light the 200-500 f5.6 will work great. I'd use a monopod with a gimble (My favorite) or a tripod to shoot the surfing and soccer. The lens gets pretty heavy hand holding it. I noticed you also mentioned Basketball. A f5.6 lens won't work in doors in most HS gyms. Recommend 24-70mm f2.8 and shoot under the basket (Don't get on the court), you'll get some great pictures.

Greetings all. Thinking about purchasing the Nikon 200-500. Much of my photography is of granddaughters’ sports - soccer, basketball and surfing. Wondering if the 200-500 would be a good choice for hand held surfing photos. Your thoughts and advice are appreciated.

Hi--I bought the 200-500 when you had to pre-order them. The only time I have ever done that! It's used extensively for sports- lacrosse, soccer and field hockey, and wildlife shots at the local sanctuary. I do use a monopod frequently, but coupled with a D500 and the great VR system I get 95-98% keepers when shooting daytime sports. Unless you have the big bucks to hand over for a 300, 400 or 500mm lens, this is as good as it gets. I did think about the Tamron and Sigma long lenses, but after the first 50 shots with this lens, I have never had those thoughts again. I am taking that lens to the OC MD. air show in June and expect to get some great shots.

Cheers
