I have no experience with either of these lenses, but be aware, the greater the zoom range, the greater chance things will be bad somewhere. There was a day when lenses of this range were basically useless in the last 100mm or so. I think things are better now.

I'd stick with the Nikon.

I have a Nikon 28-300, 3.5-5.6 G zoom lens and am considering trading it in for a Tamron 18-400 3.5-5.6 zoom. Anyone have thoughts as to whether this is a good idea? I am going to Alaska next month and could use the extra reach but am afraid I would be trading sharpness for reach.

Would anyone be able to give a fair comparison between these to lenses? Thanks in advance!!

Bought the Tamron 18-400 several months ago. Did a comparison to my Nikon 18-55 & 70-300 kit lenses at focal lengths of 18, 35, 50, 100, 200, & 300 (tripod, focused on same subject w/both big & small lettering). Ordered (Costco) 12x16 prints of each and compared focal length to focal length.

No discernible difference between Nikon vs. Tamron. So use the Tamron exclusively now.

Of course there may be a difference for the more $$$ non-kit Nikons. But I am happy with the Tamron.

Hi. This picture was taken using the Tamron 18-400 on a Canon T7i. I am a beginner striving to take better pictures. Please comment.

1st thing to do is to level the picture. It's going uphill from L to R.
2nd is to crop tighter. The main subject is the osprey feeding the chick, so crop tight enough to show that. It's not about the location or the parent osprey wings, but the feeding act. You may have to use some Topaz software to rid the noise and improve the clarity (Noise AI and AI Clear will do nicely). If I had the original, I would be able to discern better. But the fact that you used an APS camera sensor at that distance means you have a lot of cropping to do to get the subject closer. It would have been excellent if you had zoomed in closer so that you would not have had to crop so much---assuming that your lens was long enough to get tighter. This was an excellent opportunity to get the parent feeding. Thanks for sharing this and I like the potential this can have.

It's difficult to tell the quality of the photo unless you check the box "store original" when uploading.

I purchased a Tamron 100-400mm lens for my daughter to use on her D7500. It's much lighter than the Nikon 80-400mm lens, which is a plus for her, and photos have come out nice and sharp.

Much much better. See what a difference this makes to your impact without having all the distracting background elements. Good job!

I like it also because of its lighter weight compared to the Canon lens.
