For motorsports I use a 3 section Gitzo GM4532 monopod (66# max.) with a Wimberley WH200 II gimbal head for heavier, older 400 and 600mm f/2.8 D II's that weigh just under and just over 10# each.

I will occasionally use an RRS BH-55 ball head on a Manfrotto 681B (26# max.) with 5.6# f/2.8 D II's and the newer 6.4# 300 f/2.8. These are light enough that they can be hand held all day though, which is what I usually do.

Both DX and FX bodies are used with both of the above.

Google monopods with fold up feet. They have three fold up feet. Will support 16 pounds. Agree with flip locks, and correct height.

I purchased this combination of monopod and tilt head last year. The monopod came from Amazon and the tilt head from Ebay. The two were a total around $100. The monopod is very sturdy with flip type extension locks. That way I can adjust the height with one hand. It also has three folding feet for extra stability and you can easily remove them and replace with the single point if preferred. The monopod came with a hand strap for safety, but I replaced it with a regular padded camera neck strap. I purchased a second strap just like the one that I use on my camera. It has locking clips so that I can easily attach and remove the actual strap. This way when I am using the monpod I can put the strap around my neck to help secure the monopod and the camera on it and if I need both hands free for something, then the strap holds it all safely with the bottom of the monopod resting against my foot.

I use this Manfrotto, mainly due to its weight capacity and length (70.9”) coupled with a arca swiss tilt head. The monopod is compatible with Manfrotto’s feet, which I consider a recipe for disaster, imho. Highly recommended.

All day, yes sir. These were all shot 5/4 and 5/5 at Virginia International Raceway with a 300mm on a D500 but a monopod wasn't necessary.

I’ve read that you only need an up or down tilting head for a monopod, can’t remember which ones are made just for that. And a monopod seems a bit whimpy for that 600mm reach. Just a thought.

You can turn an Acratech ballhead and others, into a gimbal head. Works for a mono and tripod.

The BEST available (and you will pay appropriately) is RRS along with Gitzo, IMHO. I am presently using a Gitzo Carbon Fiber model with an RRS Tilt Head and clamp. Twist locks may not be the easiest, but they are the strongest and best. Best of luck.

I really don't like using a ball head with a monopod. And see no reason to use it with a gimbal head which is big and heavy.

As for which model monopod, I own several, and it just doesn't seem to matter which I use. Concern yourself with ease of changing height and it's weight. Changing height is something I do a lot. I may use it standing or sitting or some other way, and this is important. I like the flip out switches best. I have one that requires turning to loosen or tighten, and stay away from that kind -- except for one situation I can think of. When wandering around back country in California, which monopod would be the best weapon if I were to be attacked my a mountain lion! The one I have to turn to tighten would be a substantial weapon!

Tilt head with mono-pod!

For BIF a gimbal can also be a good choice. It allows you more freedom since the gimbal balances the camera and lens over the monopod.

Same. However, it depends on how you take your pictures. I use a monopod in a kayak. Unless I'm shooting straight ahead, I need a ball head to keep the camera level. I prefer twist locks because I can slightly loosen the twist lock and let the camera's weight gently shorten the leg. Bottom line: Decide how you want to take pictures, then decide on your gear.

Amazon has a self branded basic Monopod for $16.49 with flip locks. I have this one and other beefier Manfrottos. This works fine for the basics...up to 6.6 pounds. I wouldn't push the 6 lbs though. There all types of monopods. Just keep it simple without mounts. With a gimbal, ball and socket heads, you might as well have brought a tripod!
