You might also want to consider West Virginia Penitentiary and see if they offer a photography tour during the time of your stay. Or even the lunatic asylum. Enjoy your travels.

The lost river, lost city area is a great place. The George Washington National Forest is there and offers lots of opportunities. Lots of birds and animals in late afternoons. Large farms, barns, and just plain Americana. People are very friendly and helpful. Drive from Moorefield to Wardensville is beautiful. Take a few "back" road tours and there's a surprise around every corner. You will have more photo opportunities than you will time. Have fun. By the way, I'm not a resident of WV. My son has a cabin on top of a mountain in Lost River.

quickly, when looking at state parks, (by the way it is Pipestem State Park) by planning early almost all have really nice cabins, however you need to plan early, they fill up quickly. Check out the Highland Scenic Highway in the area going north through the eastern national forests. Cass Scenic Railroad is also a must in the fall.

I didn't know whether there would be much for us to see if we couldn't climb up to the rocks and hadn't considered the valley view options. Finding some climbers on the rocks would be an interesting subject and we both carry long lenses and tripods, so that's a helpful insight Bison Bud. Along with some of the suggestions in subsequent posts, there appears to be a lot of good destinations in the immediate area of the Blackwater Falls. Thanks for kicking things off--Seneca Rocks is on the itinerary now.

Lots of good suggestions here and there's lots to see and shoot in West VA. I'm sure you will be glad you decided to make Seneca Rocks part if your itinerary. I hope you have great weather, travel safely, and post some photos when you get home!

Consider raft/dory trip down the New River. I guided there 40 years ago and it's a great trip. Fall usually means low water and a slow, easy trip with no life threatening rapids. :) Get off of hwy 61 at Glen Jean and have a look around. It's been a long time but I know they cleaned it up and designated it a historical site. That's where the company I worked for, New River Dories, was stationed. You can follow 25 down to the put in in Thurmond, another historical site and the shooting location for the movie Matewan. Most companies put in here and take out just below the gorge bridge. This offers great views of the bridge from below. Writing this brings back some special memories! Have fun!

Don't miss Dolly Sods wilderness. If you are going to Blackwater Falls you will be very near. Take a compass! It is beautiful, but leave breadcrumbs. 😊 There is access at Timberline Resort. Canaan Valley is worth traveling through.

Lewisburg, WV is on the way if you drive US 219, along with numerous picturesque small towns and state parks. Don't miss the New River Bridge and visitors center if your route will take you near it and the Gauley River.

We have property in Canaan Valley and the valley is a gem. Many backroads to explore and trails to hike, especially in the State Park. Deer and black bear abound, along with a multitude of birds.

We are spending a week in September, but every season is beautiful there.
Have a good trip.

You might want to consider timing your trip for Bridge Day at the New River Gorge Bridge. Base jumpers from around the world assemble to parachute from the bridge into the river below. You can shoot from the bridge or the river below.

Smoke Hole "Big Bend" (NOT Texas) might be worthy of consideration. Hiking trails are reasonable/accessible (with care), might require 1/2-mile trek. "Southern" part of WV- Dirt roads. Beautiful macro, landscape vistas. Reservations for campsites required.

Hello,
I am brand new to this forum but have been reading it for quite some time. When I was young my family lived in CharlesTown WV. We moved to the northeast but my folks moved back to Harpers Ferry over 30 years ago. I have made the trip back many times. There are many fine photographic opportunities there. There is an old Catholic Church set high up in the village that offers great views of the surrounding area. If you like history at all, this place and the surrounding area will provide you many worthwhile photos. Shepardstown is another nearby town that had a picturesque small town rich in history as well. Antietam National Battlefield is a short drive from there where you can get some somber photos of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The area is quite beautiful and there are many things to see.
Good luck to you and happy shooting!

You might like the The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, a beautiful hotel and golf course. Most importantly it is the location of the underground bunker built during the 50's specifically for sheltering the US President and his cabinet in case of a nuclear war. Got to see it when it was operational, It was like a small city underground. Stored enough food for more than a year. The entire government and military could be run from this bunker. I'll never forget it, a real "cold war" relic.

If your really want a thrill go to Alderson (only 30 miles from White Sulphur Springs) and visit the Federal Reformatory for Women. I'm sure Martha Stewart could recommend it since she resided there for a while. I can personally recommend it because I lived there for 3 years from late 58 to mid 61. Yes, inside the prison! My father managed the prison farm & dairy operation and we lived on the grounds. For a 13 year old, It was a real education. If you like photographing rivers, I think you will like the Greenbrier River that runs through Alderson.

The Blenko Glass factory is in Milton, WVa, and they do give tours. Very interesting and very beautiful hand blown glass.
