I’m in a quandary. I have a Nikon 1 J5. But I’m looking at a used Nikon 1 V3. I’d be trading the J5 for the V3. Reasons? What the V3 has over the J5: virtual horizon, ML-L3 infrared remote, EVF, second control dial, AE/AF-L button, x-sync 1/250, mechanical and electronic shutter.
What the J5 has over the V3: 21MP BSI CMOS sensor vs 18MP CMOS sensor. That’s it. None of the other items listed above apply. And x-sync is 1/60.
Would I notice a visual difference in my photos? The max I print is 11 x 14; occasionally 16 x 20. I always shoot RAW and use Lightroom for touchup edits.
What would I be losing going to a smaller mp sensor? I shoot mainly landscapes on a tripod and occasional night landscapes.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a V3, HAD a J5 at one time and got rid of it just because of no viewfinder. No difference in image quality that I ever found.
The Nikon 1 system was always severely under-rated and produces some very fine images. I use my F lenses on them via the FT1 adapter with excellent results.
Made gorgeous 17 by 22 images from V1 in good light. Underrated system
Don't assume the fewer pixels will give lower quality photos. The difference between 21 mp and 18 is very slight; unrecognizable to the naked eye. You might even gain some dynamic range due to larger pixels. Go for it!
Keep in mind those cameras have been discontinued. If Nikon will serve them I do not really know.
Reflect on what you have now, are you satisfied with your shots. Apparently not, so why not try it out?
Have fun!
The V3 is the more expensive camera but some of the reviews I've read even rate the j5 as a better camera. I also have the j5 with a FT1 adapter, great results with the DX lens. I like the silver and black version of the j5, which of the two is a better camera? For me it's a toss up. As far as image quality, you wont notice any difference.
