They were cairns in olden days of rocks piled tho' not painted that served as directions for travelers. An artist did a diagonal major size installation one in New York, one in Des Moines, Iowa and one in San Diego. Sorry I can't recall his name. The one in DM is at their Art Center. He also did some non permanent ones on shore lines, those to be eliminated by incoming waves or tides. Don Z.
