I use 2 WD backup drives plus my laptop and of course my desktop. Used to burn to DVDs but it takes a bit longer to read off them. Maybe a third backup drive is in my future after reading this thread and storing it somewhere other than in my home.

I don't put them on my MAC's hard drive at all. Upon the downloading, they go straight into Lightroom CC Classic and one external hard drive. I'm guessing I will be able to download to both external hard drives while downloading into Lightroom CC Classic.

Thanks for your reply.

Like you, PAB20, I don't use my iMac's HD for photos. My raw photos, and my processed photos, presently go to one of two 4 TB drives (they're not identical, but contain different epochs of my work), and they are both backed up to an 8 TB drive by the iOS Time Machine feature, and they are both also backed up to Backblaze. The probability of two of my drives and Backblaze failing simultaneously is a chance I'm willing to take.

One downside to this approach is that the desktop drives are a lot slower than the internal drive on the iMac, but that's a penalty I've been willing to pay. Nothing's perfect, right?

I backup on: 2 external hard drives, 1 internal HD and 1 off site location all manual backups. I don't trust automatic backup software either. Also backup all pictures plus data to an external HD using Norton's back utility. My slides and negatives are in a safe deposit box at my local bank. OK I'm paranoid but I sometimes worry if I'm paranoid enough.

If they are really after you it is not paranoia. And.. just because you are paranoid, does not mean that they are not after you.

Between several harddrives, USB harddrives, NAS drives - total about 29T on my network plus portable drives - I back up EVERYTHING on at least 5 devices - and usually use BATch files to do that - and sync the devices occasionally - and of course there is my laptop.

BUT one other poster had it right - you NEED offsite backup too - I don't have that - haven't gotten a family member or very good friend to swap WD My Clouds with me ... but lacking that I have 2 1T usb sticks with EVERYTHING including full system image back-ups of desktop and laptop in a metal screw top water proof air tight pill capsule container in my pocket always. So - almost as good as off site and pretty easy to keep up.

Almost.

Is that data encrypted? Just saying.

Well now that is a unique archive/DR strategy. Been doing this for many decades, and that is a first!

Thank-you - but no --- I'm not that paranoid ....... yet. Besides - if they get it out of my pocket - its likely I have other more immediately urgent problems than data.

Lessee, you've got "about 29T," and your offsite backup is two 1T usb sticks? Hmmmm. Just what am I missing? I never was that good at math, so I guess I need some help here. How do you squeeze "EVERYTHING" on 29T into 2T???

I backup my pictures and all important data to six usb drives.
Three of which I keep in a fire resistant safe.
Good for a 1,700 degree fire for one hour.
I copy, not cut and paste from the memory card to drive one and then the others.
Just incase the first drive dies before I copy them out.

That should do it!

A question. If the first drive dies during import, would not the images still be available for re-copying from the SD card?

You need an off-site DR (disaster recovery) copy to protect against fire, flood, power surge, lightning, etc. as well as a local backup. Unless your internet access is very slow, I would use ICloud if I were using a Mac. Very easy to set up a regular (at least nightly) backup.

I don’t use a Mac and all my photos go to iCloud anyway.

But iCloud is an Apple service so .. what is your point?

Yes they are.
That is why I copy them to the first drive.
If that drive happens to fail, I can still copy them to the second drive.
Then the rest of my drives.
Of course if the first drive doesn't fail I'm happy.
Drives are so cheap.
I purchased another 4tb WD drive at Wallyworld today for $97.00.

OMG 4tb for $97? I am old enough to remember kB drives it is amazing how technology has marched forward. Storage technology has outpaced my need for storage. How good is that ? Anyway I salute you for understanding that digital data is tenuous and multiple copies are needed to assure longevity.

And you have to leap-frog the data forward as technology changes.

That’s a great idea - storing on a USB stick and carrying it with you.

For my photos I don’t need 1TB. 256 GB would work for me. So I’m wondering:

Would an SD card work instead of a USB stick? A lot smaller carrying around. Cost about the same.
How would the write/read speed compare to USB?
FAT or NTFS format?

Thoughts?
