My wife and I were in Pompeii in October 2016. I carried a Sony RX-100iv but saw folks with all kinds of photo equipment, no tripods however - suggest you leave that behind. Very enjoyable despite the crowds.

Thank you to everyone for your experiences and advice. I am less apprehensive now about taking my D800.

There was a statue of a guy in there, maybe 1940 years old but very well endowed. They had a sense of humor back then.

was there 18 months ago, no problem with a "pro" camera, though I didn't use a tripod (which may be not needed anyway). There are similar announced restrictions for Knossos (Crete) that I honored to my regret.

I need input from photographers who have actually been to and photographed Pompeii. We will be going there on a cruise in November. All of the information on photography in Pompeii I can find simply states, "No professional cameras or tripods allowed in Pompeii." The problem is that, like policies at many other other places, there is no definition of what constitutes a "professional camera". So my question is, based on your experience in Pompeii, what do they consider a "professional camera". How do they define it by physical dimensions and, if so what are those dimensions or is it by length of the lens, interchangeability of lenses, crop Vs. full frame, etc.? Also, how strictly do they enforce the policy? Thank you.

My wife and I were there in 2013 as a shore excursion offered on a cruise. The cruise ship never cautioned us about this. I had a D700 and a 28-300 lens. We walked freely around the area and had no issues. Sorry that I can’t give you an update for 2019 though.

Went to Pompeii this past summer and saw nothing that prohibited cameras. Tripods are pretty much not allowed in most places in Italy. Unless you are there on a very dark and cloudy day a tripod is not needed.
Take all the photos you want there is a lot to see. I wish I took more than what I did. Enjoy yourself.
