After purchase and out of warranty service

Just my humble opinion.
I use Nikon and have always found the Mississauga Ont. Nikon service centre excellent in repairing and serviceing
my cameras. It is always expensive but as long as the job is done right I can live with that.
I consider myself lucky after reading about the level of service by Nikon and Canon and nightmare experiences that some owners have gone through. The Canon users want to switch to Nikon and the Nikon users want to switch to Canon figuring they will get better service. From what I read both companies are starting to let their customers down when there are pages and pages of complaints on the internet.
It sure doesn't instill confidence when you are paying top $$$$ for their products

I believe that the sheer volume of entry level & pro-sumer DSLRs sold over the last few years has swamped manufacturer repair facilities. I would be interested to see sale volumes over the last 10-years. I doubt if the training/hiring of repair personnel has kept-up with cameras in the market.

I would have to agree with you. With all the different models and the complexity of the new technology, it's a wonder that they can keep the training up for the technicians.

It's a real shame when a customer pays upwards from $500.00 for a product and then pay through the nose when something is wrong with it, not to mention be without the camera for over a month.

Nikon service in Melville (Long Island) NY was running less than two weeks just after Sandy practically closed Long Island down. They were hit so bad I was actually worried that UPS might not be able to deliver to them. My camera was back in about two weeks which I think is more than acceptable especially given the circumstances.

I think 2 weeks in this case is extraordinary and Nikon service should be proud. I shoot Canon and have only needed service once but it was done in a timely and professional manner. I'm sure there are horror stories but not all repairs are awful. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike

I'm not sure that's the problem. I think it's more a case of profiteering.
Ask for a detailed breakdown of the repairs and return of the replaced parts. You might be surprised.
Nikon charged me £95 for labour and over £200 for an anodised black aluminium tube about 40mm long, 60mm Diameter and about 1.5mm thick. No precision holes, threads, baffles - just a little tube which must have cost them all of £1 to make.

Melville is far inland ,not near the shore where Sandy did most of its damage. Two weeks is the average for repairs at the Nikon shop.

You'll always see pages and pages of complaints about the service of every company. Those who are satisfied go on with life and don't bother to comment. Those who are not will always yell and scream in every way they can for as long as they can - even when the complain is trivial, such as the price being $10 higher than quoted. The number of satisfied customers is probably many times larger than the unsatisfied but you can't see that.

Thanks for the info. Nikon advised on their website at the time to expect delays. Though their facility may not have had a problem you have to figure some percentage of their techs were hit and even for those that were not their ability to get to work certainly must have been rough for awhile immediately after Sandy.

Remember that you will see complaints from almost everyone who is unhappy with the service. Most people who are satisfied don't make a comment.
