I thought this was interesting because I had to pay extra to get the phone I wanted not the one that came free with the contract!

I would equate this to saying you don't own your DVD player because it will only stream Netflix, or that you have to buy parts from Chevy so you don't really own your Corvette, and so on.
It's just business.

Hey Doc ..... ever send your Rolex back for a cleaning ? Looks like new but at $600 you never own a Rolex, you're merely renting .....

Great article.

Why is it you are 'allowed' to modify your computer, laptop or notebook, but not your tablet or phone?

I wonder then if you install a custom ROM bypassing the phone companies copyrighted software if you are still under threat from this law.

It's pretty simple and the law should allow you to unlock your phone after the expiration of the initial contract... Yes, maybe you paid $100 for that $600 smart phone when you signed a new 2 year contract, but did you really think that those companies do this out of the goodness of their heart? The price of the phone is contingent on the signing of the contract and until that contract is satisfied the phone is not really yours.

I am not very familiar with the law, but if it is to be fair the phones should be able to be unlocked after the contract is fulfilled.

Actually, you do not own the operating system on your computer. You purchase a license to use it on a specific machine. You do not own Adobe Photoshop either. The list goes on. This is a fairly common way of doing business these days.

Hey Doc ..... incorrect ..... if you purchase PS the info is yours, there is nothing they could do to shut it down because you already have the program ..... not so with a cell phone as long as it's still activated .....

Try reading that agreement you clicked on during installation. Also, try putting your copy of Photoshop on all three of your computers and see what happens during activation. You'll discover that you do not exactly own Photoshop.

I posted the first couple of paragraphs of their agreement. They have used that same agreement since day one for all of their products.

You can reload or reinstall about once every six months without tripping any alarms. However, the fact that you are violating the agreement and haven't been caught doesn't make it legal, ethical, or right.
