Remembrance for the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III

We come not to bury him, but to praise him …

As discussed in another UHH post, my first lens for my first digital camera was posted to the Classifieds today. I guess 4+ years of good use doesn’t really justify getting all gushy with sentiment. Hopefully, this lens will find a good home on his next stop…

By way of advertising his capabilities, I searched through my files and pictures to find some examples of the quality job he did for me thru the years. I was living in DC at the time in Penn Quarter for those familiar with the area. You can see I worked with neighborhood subjects learning the new equipment back in 2006 – 2009.

Most everything was shot with a tripod or monopod. You can see the light was most always bright to get the best results.

I turned around from the trunk of my car when I heard a crunch crunch crunch of gravel approaching. I was already changing lens at the moment, slapped on the 75-300 and caught this big guy in passing.

That is actually called the North Rim Upper Falls in Yellowstone. I have been there 3 times and am amazed every time at the roar of water falling 320 feet. Here are a couple of mine.

hedyd4me - very nice views. I've only had one Yellowstone trip with just 2-days in the park as part of a larger trip to the UT / ID / MT area.

I have spent a total of 12 days in the park. I even signed release waivers twice to go hiking in the back country. Once I was on my way back from Edmonton, Alberta where my younger sister lives. I went to Banff National Park in Canada, Glacier National Park in Montana and Yellowstone all in in a 4 day period. That was a blast.

Great pictures with a great lens. I am sure it will go to a good home where it will be appreciated. There again, if you don't sell it, just keep it and continue to love and use it.

I am planning a trip there this summer. Can you make recommendations on lens I should have and any must see things to photograph.

Auntie Em .. as shown on Saturday when mounted to a monopod and a 7D body (Conservatory pics added to the classified posting), the v III can still pull out some good pictures. But, after getting an IS version at the same focal, it's hard to find a situation the older model gets airtime ...

Summer trip to Yellowstone.

werkendoc - Let's hope hedyd4me gives some good ideas based on more experience. I used an EF-S 10-22mm inside the Old Faithful Inn to capture the whole open 4-stories. You'll need a 200mm or greater zoom for things like Old Faithful and / or distant wildlife (or closeups like a bighorn sheep or buffalo). A general purpose zoom from the 20s to the 80s+ will cover most everything else (like bighorn sheep or a buffalo). As a Canon guy, I can only talk what I know, but Nikon covers all the same...as do the 3rd parties.

I too shoot Canon, currently the 50D, however I am saving for the 5D markIII. I currently have the 70-200 2.8, I also have the 2x . Do you think I would be okay with that or should I "force" myself to purchase the Canon 100-400 lens?

Canon 100-400 lens?

I've never rented a lens, but I see that suggestion a lot. However, the time I pulled up the prices, it didn't seem that cost effective for me. I'd also think about how / where / when I'd use the longer length above 200mm. Do I have kids in sports, hiking opportunities, a nearby forest / swamp full of exotic birds and wildlife? I think you're already well set up with the 70-200.

Werkendoc I have a Canon EOS Rebel XS so I can only speak for that. I have the 18x55mm EFS lens as well as the 55x250mm EFS. With the latter I was able to do most of my shooting including Buffalo (you don't want to get too close). Old Faithful, The North Rim Upper Falls, Tower Fall, The Opal Pool, Jelly Geyser and Yellowstone Lake are just a few few of the must see features. The Grand Tetons south of Yellowstone are well worth the visit if time allows. The last time I was there in 2009 I stayed in the park 5 days. Check out my web site for just a few pictures. The first 7 are Banff and Glacier Parks the rest are Yellowstone: http://www.bobthomasonphotography.com/National_Parks.php
