Does anyone know if you can carry on tripods, or do you have to put them in your checked luggage?
People carry them on, but you risk a lack of space especially on smaller planes and the chance someone will park their stuff on top of it. A nice flight attendant will sometimes store it in their closet if they have room.
While not prohibited as such some TSA Agents may see it as a club.

I've settled for a monopod in the checked baggage.
Just make sure it has a ball head or a flip head for vertical shots.
?? Leave VR , OS on?
I have carryed my tripod and camera gear on the plane
with no problems . Tripod is in a carrying case
I carry mine on my camera backpack as carryon and have never had a problem with security or space availability
I carried mine on strapped to the side of my bag
I have carried a small one but you never know if/when some TSA agent may decide it is a club & refuse to let in on. Overseas all bets are off, some let anything on, had one agent in India try to take my small allen wrenches because they were a "tool" ( his supervisor had more sense & I kept them) so be prepared to check it if needed.
The limiting factor for a tripod would be the same as any other carry on-will it fit in the rectangular "size check box" at the departure gate- if too long it becomes checked baggage.
I flew with one in the over head compartment from Chicago to LA, to two different Hawaii destinations. Then back from Hawaii to LA where a TSA agent must have thought I looked like a terrorist and made me check it. You just never know.
If they make you check it, does that happen at the gate, or do you lose it if you try to take it through security?

You would be stopped at security. They will tell you to go back to the checkin desk & check it or they will confiscate it. If you don't have a lot of time (especially between flights) it may be hard to check it, expensive to give it up. That's why I usually check mine.
Thank you all for your reponses. I guess I will be checking my tripod.

I fly with mine often. I always have it strapped to my carry on day pack and it has never been an issue. (This is flying within the U.S. I have no experience carrying it on internationally.)
I have a full-height (5-section) carbon fiber tripod that fits inside my 19" carry-on. Weighs 3 pounds but is very sturdy.
