As some of you may remember, a few weeks ago I asked for advice on winter travel ideas. Well:
We just got back from Yellowstone. I will post more photos as I have time. These shots seem to summarize our time there: Stunning beauty in the winter without the crowds to spoil it.
I'd be glad to try to answer questions if any of you are considering a winter visit to YNP.
Cheers,
Greg
Ps: Shots taken with D800, 16-35mm, handheld
Pps: Tried to send originals but it wouldn't let me, so I downsized them.

Personally, I'd put all three of them on my wall. Beautiful scenery and fantastic shots.
I love the 2nd one. Just beautiful.

All the walkways were packed snow and ice, so I had a friend hang on to my belt while i leaned over the railing to get coverage I wanted while leaving out the railing.
Thanks to you all for your kind remarks. It's pretty hard to not get some fantastic scenery there.
All beautiful images. They are definetly wall hangers.
It looks like they had a relatively mild winter. I was there in 1993 and the snow was more than five feet deep above the falls.

Yes, guides told us they are in a multi-year drought. There was maybe 2-3 ft. of snow at higher (7200 ft.) elevations back in the park. Most south facing slopes were bare.
At least winter still has a couple more months to let them catch up.
Awesome beauty! can't wait to see more....
Those are great!
Yellowstone is beautiful any time of year but winter really has a charm to it. My wife and I went in the spring in 1999, Yellowstone lake was still totally froze over and snow covered. Passes were closed twice in the five (I think) days we were there. No crowds at all, we even got a room at the inn with no reservation! The rest of the time there we camped in our little trailer. The only problem with Yellowstone in the winter for photography (and seeing in general) is dealing with the steam around the thermal features, could only see the edges of Grand Prismatic Springs. Otherwise I highly recommend it in May to avoid the crowds. Maybe I will do a post of some of my scanned slides later. ;)
Please post some more. These were just wonderful!

Thank you, I am working on my hot springs/thermal features shots. I will try to post some of them tomorrow evening. The steam was a real challenge. Some luck of timing vs. the wind direction was involved.
I wil look forward to seeing more when you have time to post. How wonderful to be able to be there in Winter!
I just checked the current conditions and it looks like the current "average" for the various watersheds and river basins is 95 inches. Still well below average but improving.
