Is there a way to fine tune a canon 24-105 to a canon T3i
Am I expecting to much, these don't seem as tack sharp as
I have seen other people post with the 24-105 L. I realize I
am using a T3i. I plan to move up to a 7D very shortly and I
Just got this Lens New yesterday. I guess I am trying to find
out if I need to send it to Canon for fine tuning. Here are
three test shots from today. All hand held no tripod. Thanks mdh
Well...those shots are pretty freaking sharp...The thermometer is very sharp and the horse plaque is sharp on the horse itself.
All the adjustment is for is moving the "point of focus" forward or backward.
The way to check it is to do the quick and dirty method:
1.) Put the camera on a tripod next to a table.
2.) Set up 5 or 6 AA batteries in a line, about 1/2" apart but slanted at a 45 deg angle to the lens.
3.) Focus on the middle battery...you should see that one clear and then the next batteries less clear, and the farther ones more blurred.
You'll know you have a problem if you focus on the middle battery and it's not sharp but the next one is...or if the surface you focused on isn't sharp but it's sharpening as it goes around the battery...
Anything that's graduated and on an angle will do it...hotdogs? Lol....
They all look very sharp to me. The only parts of the photos that I saw out of focus were obviously a result of limited depth of field. I'm no expert and I do wear glasses; but it looks good to me. (cleaned the glasses before making any comments.)

Your new 7D will have a custom function that the T3i doesn't have that will allow you to correct for front or back focusing problems.
It is impossible to tell from your informal test weather there is a problem with your 24-105. You need to do more rigorous testing using standard test targets at various f/stops, zoom levels and distances.
rpavich Thank you so much, I will try that first thing in the morning. I did a photo series for my granddaughter today (almost froze) she needed them for her graduation invitations. They turned out good and I used a tripod. I wanted them to be soft and not too sharp on the face shots. I am tickled pink with the color this lens captures and can't wait until I save up enough for
a 100-400 L. AGAIN thank you so much for your help. mdh
birdpix Thank you I bought David Busch's book on the 7D. I
thought I read something on the 7D being able to do that but
could not find anything in my T3i manual to do so. You folks
have me headed the right way and I thank you.

On a tripod.....remember to turn
IS off. That alone will degrade your sharpness.

Interesting. May I ask why? I suppose I don't know how the IS works.

Morrisdh;
The three examples are not good subject to test your AF, to do that you need a flat imagen with as much details as possible, in the web there are many chart to do that.
In your example you are mislead, because the relieve of subjet.
If you don't find the chart I will try to bring one like this one unfortunate is very small.

Rpavich answered your question but I will add that when you upgrade to a 7D you will be able to fine tune your lenses and camera using the AF microadjustment if it is needed.
