Just trying to see if the above makes me a narrow minded bigot! Some people can't take a joke!

I'd say 18.

In the first two examples, add the individual digits and then multiply. In the last one, add 3 plus 3 on both sides of the multiplication sign and then multiply, giving you thirty six.

Or:
Multiply 11X11 to get 121. Then add the digits to get 4.
Multiply 22x22 to get 484. Then add the digits to get 16.
Multiply 33x33 to get 1089. Then add the digits to get 18.

Two solutions that both work.

That is really cool. Although both solutions work, yours has a level of complexity that totally escaped me. I am always amazed at the different ways people see math and patterns. Well done!!!

I'm looking at the progression in the series of answers. 4x4=16, the answer to 22x22. The next answer in the series would be 256, 16x16.

The equations also follow a natural progression. 11x11, 22x22, 33x33, so the answers must also follow a natural progression.
