Most butterflies live only about two weeks as winged adults. It is easy to spot an older butterfly, due to their tattered wing edges, and missing wing scales. This Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta), is ready to retire, as winter sets in.

Photographed at the Fullerton Botanic Garden, Cal State Fullerton.

Hand-held Nikon D5000 at ISO 400, with Nikkor 105G macro lens, 1/200-sec at f/16, partial shade & Nikon SB-600 speedlight with O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment. Approximately 1:3 magnification (1/3 life-size).
