Useless photography trivia.

was reading on line at popphoto.com about HAL the supercomputer in the movie 2001 a space Odyssey. scenes with Hal involved the astronauts talking to a wall mounted lens. turns out that the lens was a Nikon 8 mm fish eye. Extremely rare on ebay there is one going for around $48,000. Another useless trivia fact is if you take the name Hal and drop down one letter for each letter in the name you get IBM. Arthur C Clarke said it was a coincidence but really is something the mad genius Stanley Kubrick would do.
proves even insane computers prefer Nikon!
dave, dave what's the matter dave?
This is stuff I needed to know.
There are so many reasons to be on this forum. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike
Wanted to get one. But on my crop sensor it would be like a 12 mm. Just not wide enough.

If HAL was looking through an 8mm Fisheye, no wonder he was so paranoid. Everybody probably looked like a space monster. W. H. Taft on HGH.
Thanks for sharing that totally worthless information, Sman. That's the kind of stuff I love! :)

It beats the heck out if the 137th iteration of "I want to be a professional. What settings should I use?"!
Thanks, Ken! I will finally sleep well tonight!
Important info that everyone should be aware of! :) :)
Did you know that the song "Daisy, Daisy" that HAL sings when he's being shut down was the first non human. i.e. synthesized voice reproduced [and on a computer]. It contains the line "I'm half crazy."
I love trivia
Thanks, I really needed to know that. Especially since I owned a 8mm Fish-Eye in the late 60's - Sold it for about £100 in the mid-70's
