Introduce Yourself
Hi from Northern California

I've been taking photos since I was a little kid, thankfully I have an eye for it, and parents that were willing to fit the bill for film developing. I went through roll and roll of 10 and 35mm film while growing up! Thank goodness for digital, makes my passion much less expensive and easier to share!
I own several cameras, including one of the original Poloroid Land Cameras, a Pentax K-1000, two different Olympus, etc...
I take photos of people, landscapes and micro (my Fave). I would like to someday have a highspeed camera that takes 60+ photos per second to capture fast action in small places that most people just walk past.
I am an (unpaid) photographer for a non-profit, I photograph their special events. I have won a few contests, and lost a few more! Plus some of my photos have been published by Bass Pro Shops in their advertising.
What would I like to get out of this forum? Well, I would like honest, constructive, impartial critiques to not only improve my photos, but to help select ones to put in my portfolio.

Welcome to the group, BGenie. Nice photos. The second one looks a bit out of focus. I like #1, and the fireworks shot is very good. Just my opinion however..

Thanks David.
The second photo, I was using a cheap point-n-shoot camera and I could not get it to focus on anything other then the fence in the front (sigh). Plus, I was with people who do not appreciate a good photo and were saying "let's go!", hurrying me along.

I plan to visit the Montezuma Hills (CA) again in the spring. I don't know if the old windmill will still be there, but if it is, I'll want to use my nice Olympus. Plus I'll probably take 2-3 steps to the left, putting the new windmill in the upper left third, and the old one in the lower right.

Welcome to the site. It's great having another shutterbug from Sacramento. Your list of cameras sounds all to familure. I loved my K-1000 back when I was shooting film. I look forward to seeing more of your pics.

Thanks! He was hanging out on my deck last Saturday. I took about 25-30 photos of him, and liked 3 of them, this one best. It was kind-a hard to get the right angle on him. Most insects are easy, but his character is seen from the side, not the top... and I love that he is checking me out, as much as I am checking him out!

I perused through a few of the posts in the photo section and felt I was being put to shame! But really, it just makes me motivated to learn more, and make time for myself and my passions.

Welcome BGenie, from a fellow Northern Califonian living here in the Delta. Nice pictures...I really like the mantis and the youngster with the cane poles. Reminds me that I need to get my boat fixed so that I can get back to fishing and taking pictures out on the Delta before the weather gets too bad.

Here's another photo of the windmills and an old drill-rig. I'm not sure if it was used to drill the foundations of the windmills, I just thought it was sad that it had been abandoned...

Hi Tom, Well if you were in hiding, you just gave yourself away :) I'm a member of the 'Stockton Rod and Gun Club' on the delta so I'm slightly familiar. (It's a lot more 'rod' then 'gun', lol)
The child's photo was taken in June when the club sponsors the 'Walter Banks Fishing Derby' for the kids at a local pond. It's usually on the first free-fishing day of the year.

Have you been to the boat parade of x-mas lights? People light up their boats/yachts just like others do to their houses, and have a 'parade' along the river. The one in Stockton is on the first Sat of December. I'm not sure when the one in Sacramento is, but it is located in the Discovery park area.

I have been unsuccessful for the past 6 years, trying to get photos of 'slow moving' (15mph) boats, in the pitch-dark, 100 yards away (so flash won't work) with just pinpoints of lights on them. They are always a blur and not pretty blurs at that. I have tried with 3 separate cameras, and yes I have my camera settings cranked down, and have tried the 'fireworks' settings to no avail. If you know the area better (like where the boats start, slow down, and/or turn around), I'd love some company who likes to photograph and experiment. Feel free to PM me!
