I finally bit the bullet and got a D600 last night. So today I did a comparison against my old D3000. Shot the same pic, used the same lense, set both cameras to auto.
The D600 shot it at ISO 100, 1/320 sec.
The D3000 shot it at ISO 200, 1/1250 sec.

What do you think of the diference?

Looks like more depth of field right?
So whats up with that, did the big difference in shutter speed cause it?
How can 10 mp be better than 24?

To do a comparison, same lens used on both cameras and the same settings, else your comparing apples and oranges.

Right, should have set manual settings.

Makes me feel better about my d3000

I'll try again with the same settings as soon as I figure out the D600.

I have a D70 that still shoots great photos and it is a 5MP camera if I remember well.

At this small size I don't think MP mean anything and the shots were taken with different settings.

The test might be more valid with full size samples and manual settings.

I am sure your D600 will give you the sharper pictures when you git it figured out. Keep in mind that if you are reducing the two images to the same size then you are compressing the D600's image more than twice as much with that much more less in detail depending on the software that is compressing them.

The D3000 underexposed by a stop, it seems. This accounts for the difference in looks.

PhotoArts is correct, of course. The very data you posted shows a 1 stop difference, but more to the point, dumbing the images down to post here negates any possible comparison of quality. I would want to see them as side-by-side prints. You may mail them to me. :-)

I know - I am old school - if it is not a print, it doesn't count. :-)

The only difference I could see was slight more light on the boats on right, but the sunlight can change quickly.

I'm in agreement with the different settings issue. I think both cameras should be in full manual mode with the same settings for a true comparison.
With all the reading and experimenting I've been doing lately I've gone to using full manual or one of the priority modes (aperture or Shutter).
I have found some good books by Bryan Peterson on exposure, flash, and composition.

The second looked a little sharper. What were the aperture settings on the lens?
