best image quality in non-DSLR camera?

I am having a VERY hard time deciding on a new camera. I don't want a DSLR because I don't want to have to deal with multiple lenses in different situations, so I have been thinking of a bridge camera like the Canon SX50 or Panasonic FZ200 or waiting to see the Fuji SL1000. But what I am really interested in is the best image quality in a camera that has a decent zoom range. It doesn't have to be a mega-zoom like 50x. What is the best image quality camera in a non-DSLR?

I have a Sony DSC RX100. 20 megapixel 1"CMOS senor, F1.8 Zeiss lens, great 1080i HD video, truly amazing camera. Google it, read up on it. Not a long zoom lens, plenty of features. It is a great camera, most reviews call it the best point and shoot camera in the world. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like the 20mp and large sensor are very impressive. I was hoping for a zoom range more than 3.6x but if the photo quality is superlative, I guess I could crop and still be able to blow up pictures? Still hoping for a somewhat larger zoom range...

After seeing the results I have gotten with my SX40, plus all of the other SX40 users posts on here (especially those from Carolina Wings of her bird shots), and now the pictures that have been posted from the SX50, my personal choice would be the SX50.

SX50 has an amazing zoom range, can focus at 0cm in the wide setting, and the digital zoom is actually something that can be used with very good results. The Panasonic does have good results, but the lack of zoom to at least 10x or 20x and then its price keep me from looking that way. Fuji also has some great cameras, however there is also the movement of the LCD to consider and the SX50/SX40 have much better movement available than most of the other "bridge" cameras available.

Don't ignore the Fuji. They have excellent glass. I have an S20 pro and an S9500 (both getting on a bit). They are light, and with lots of features. BUT, they burn through batteries at a frightening rate.

You are asking for rather a lot. A 28 - 100 zoom is likely to give better qulity than 28 - 200. In my view, any more is asking for the moon.
Good lenses cost money; I would go for either Leitz or Zeiss, which probably means Panasonic or Sony for the camera (RX100 or LX7).

Look at the reviews in dp on the canon g1x. has a big sensor. Also, consider the new canon g15 it too is getting sterling reviews.

I bought the Leica V-Lux 4 and love it. Zoom is 25-600, f2.8. Light and easy to carry.
